Nothing good happens after 10pm once you're married and have kids anyway Hank. Except for about 3 minutes after you've had a rare night out and had a few drinks , put the kids to bed and had the wife say " Cmon , lets get this over with so I can go to sleep".

I always thought I was a blessed man.

Threads like this make me realize how much.

i'll be 45 when my 3rd turns 18. we regularly got ribbed about not being able to stay out, do this, that or the other thing because of the kiddos. still do at times but our kidless friends are now starting to have kids in their mid to late 30's and are realizing they are going to have teenagers when they are nearing 60. and chances are won't have much time with their grandkids, especially if they adopt their kid bearing strategy. we have a few friends who just decided they didn't want kids and the guys got snipped. their wives now secretly long for children and i assume it will probably tear their marriages apart.

fun stuff.

Similar thing here. I'll be 48 and entering the prime of my life when the twins go off to college....

Or dead from a massive coronary due to raising twin teenage girls...

My parents were older than just about every other parent when I was a kid. It sucked, my dad could hardly play ball or goof around. Always played with the neighbors dad who was younger, and could throw us pop-ups and touchdowns for hours on end. Was a huge reason I had kids at a younger age.

Also, I want to be a younger grandpa too. Lots of benefits to that.

And I'd rather have the kid-free time after they have grown up, instead of pre-kids.

We got married when we were younger and had kids right away. Then we had a child when our youngest was almost ten.
We will have a teenager and grand kids when we hit 60. Our friends constantly remind us how lucky we are.

Best of both worlds.

it was funny. our friends took a trip to europe for like 2 weeks. they are kidless, i was like we could never do that right now. they were like "this is great! we want these adventures now! not later!?" we went to a party at their house and this older retired couple just also got back from a european vacation and this was the conversation

older couple in 50's : when you guys were in x city did you do y?

friends : no we did just walked around

older couple in 50's : did you take the train to z?

friends : no we just walked around the city

older couple in 50's : in A city did you eat at this restaurant?

friends : no we just walked around the city. we were on a budget and we didn't want to go over

older couple in 50's : that sucks.

obviously a one off case but i was like, "man going on a vacation like that when you are 30 doesn't sound as amazing as when you are retired"

It sounds like your friends suck at going on vacation.

Also, if they can't afford a decent vacation to Europe, they probably couldn't afford taking care of a child either.

You young parents are scaring me. Kids may be out of the picture for me.

Both of my parents were just 20 when I was born.

We had a travel agent plan our Euro vacation last year. Got to see tons of places (while running Tons Of Stuff). That was the way to go. Same TA is planning our Ireland vacation this fall.

Having multiple kids would have solved this problem for a couple in their 30s that still can't afford a train ride and a restaurant in Europe!

I understand the benefits of having kids earlier but it is in no way a negative to be able to vacation however you want without waiting until your 50s.

Of course, they thought walking around the city exploring sucked. They're over 50. All their questions involved sitting.

This fall I'm going to Munich for Oktoberfest. I'll make sure to cancel as I don't possess an AARP card.

No, just wish I were more successful.

I feel like I am about to turn the corner professionally (and hopefully financially), and I would like a few years to enjoy it...but at that point, I'd be pushing 40, and the current girl is 3 years older than me. She wants a kid like yesterday, and wants a marriage like last week. I'm not sure about either.

It's been a great life though, throughout the ups and downs.

RReader, if you're reading this, did you hear about the 7 people shot at the laundromat on 79th and Marquette? I used to wash clothes there every now and then when I lived that way. They had free dryers, which was always a thing.

that part about the one off case must of gotten by you. we took a trip to england and did some amazing things cost be damned before we had kids. this couple just always happened to bring up how they were going on trips and we'd be unable to because we had kids.

i'm 34. anything that involves sitting generally sounds amazing. as a matter of fact, whenever my wife has some cockamamie plans, i am always ok as long as there is somewhere i can sit. you want to pick blueberries? will there be somewhere i can sit? you want to go to try on shoes all afternoon? will there be somewhere i can sit?
