I thought these libraries were paid for with private funds?

Or Kenya.

Hawaii did the smartest thing. Offered up some jr version to compliment wherever the other one goes. So they have no real competition, just need Obama approval and I am guessing any excuse to go to Hawaii fits the bill!

They are going to honor all his accomplishments while he lived in Hawaii!

Yes!

Wrong.

Presidential libraries are both a museum and a place for scholarship. Obama's place in history will make it particularly relevant as a destination point, a forum for discussion and resource for all of this city's universities. This will be a major get for the city and I wholeheartedly support it.

The same is true of the proposed Lucas Museum.

Both have the same problem of location but the question of "should we pursue them" should not be open for debate.

Come on now, dolphin. Presidential museums are real museums in much the same way dan bernstein is a real journalist. Sure, their papers are kept there and scholars can do their work, but more than anything they are monuments to that president's ego. They certainly don't take an even-handed approach to history. They aren't run by historians. They're run by the president's buddies.

That said, I want Chicago to get the museum. The presidential museum of the first black president will be quite an attraction. But demanding park land for it is unnecessary and frankly, a big WYC for a guy who fashions himself a "man of the people". We're already choking on the Michael Reese site that numbnuts bought in his flight of Olympic fancy. It could go there. Or it could go on the U.S. Steel site. It would definitely drive development down there. But no, the rich want their playthings where and how they want them and I suspect they will get them.

That goes for Lucas too. You're championing that "museum" when we don't even know what's going to be in it. Some Norman Rockwell crap and a few R2D2s? World class!

Do you know who Buster Crabbe is? He was a famous motherfucker at one time. Played Tarzan and Flash Gordon. A Star Wars museum in 2080 will be like a Buster Crabbe museum would be today. I would hope there's more to it than Chewy and Jar-Jar.

Lincoln Presidential Library does pretty well.

Now, Obama isn't Lincoln but he certainly holds a unique position in presidential history. He will be the subject of scholarship. Items particular to him will be of interest to many demographics.

This will be a must see when you come to Chicago in the same way the motel where King was shot and now turned into a museum is a must see in Memphis. Any African American parent within reasonable driving distance would be derelict in his responsibilities not to take his children.

Even handed is immaterial. He is the first African American President of the United States. If that were his only claim to fame, it would still be hugely significant.

Lucas is far more than Star Wars. Far more than movies really. As far as relevancy, you had hair when you first heard the words Star Wars and you will be pushing up daisies well before those words aren't in the general lexicon.

I wish Columbia College would step up a little on this museum. This could be a boom for them in terms of movie production education.

I loved Flash Gordon. Ming the Merciless was just alright too.

Did Mellody hire you as counsel on this project? Man, we don't even know what's gonna be in that museum. Lucas hasn't told us. Are we giving away park land so some dope can operate a giant Star Wars retail shop?

I wrote in my original post that I am troubled by the siting of both libraries.

However, I don't find the area clustered along the lakeshore with Mc Cormack, Soldier, Shedd and Natural History to be sacred open park land. It would look foolish to have that as open space and it is completely logical and complementary to have it as a public institution.

of course it is, you just locked in the biggest convention they can hold each year.

Have to admit, would be more interested in the Lucas Museum! By then some Oculus based 3D movement ride has to be ready to roll for $20 a person for a 7 minute journey, 4 people to a pod.

The merchandising would be endless.

It's already there at Disney Hollywood Studios.

Again, Lucas is more than Star Wars.

Can we at least agree that there is a difference between the current museums on that campus and some rich guy from San Francisco setting up a monument to himself and selling plastic R2D2s?

Also, "no taxpayer funds will be used"? Famous last words.

If SHE chooses NYC, she should be ashamed for making Chcago do the dance for her and spend millions in time and energy offering to build her and her WIFE a monument to them only blocks from their house, as if they arent familar with the area and what will be done.

I will agree, she learned how to be a slimeball politican from the king of slimeballs, King Daley.

The funny part here is that I said about 10 times they should place the musuem in an area that needs the impact, which she claims to be doing in NYC....but not here?

Her ass exempts her from any Douchebag nominations. It's probably the only reason Obama tolerates her.

I'm willing to admit I could be wrong on the whole big ass debate but I am as certain as I could be about something that a 51 year old posterior allows for exemption from nothing.

Is the library going to Hawaii? The guy running the show for the Obamas, Marty Nesbitt, just bought Magnum P.I's old house.

Did Higgins come with the house?

I thought George Soros was running the show.
