He's not religious nor right wing and the crime is not corruption.

Unfortunately, the underlying issue may be worse than public corruption.

Good question. If it turns out that he was being blackmailed by the family of a boy who was molested, I think the family is guilty of protecting a molester from society. If it was just someone who had an affair with Hastert and Hastert wanted to keep it quiet, then no harm done to society, except maybe she (or he) should have to pay taxes on the money as it exceeds gift limits.

I don't think either side will consider it a blackmail, more of an agreement.

Denny should have had a better story cooked up. The payments could be for "consulting".

Seems more likely to be the actual boy. He was probably a middle or high school kid when he was Coach Hastert's charge in the late 70s or early 80s. Smartly, he waited until Hastert had some real lobbying dough and dropped the hammer. Gotta respect the patience at least.

I was a teacher at Yorkville HS back in 1997-99. I’ll never forget reading through the district seniority list and wondering why my department chair was 2nd on the list to a name I did not recognize. I asked my co-teachers “Who’s Dennis Hastert?”. There was a bit of laughter and then it was explained to me that he was a teacher and wrestling coach there for years, but had gone into politics some years back. Since he stayed in government, we was still active on the district list.

I never met him, but I met his wife once. He had a lot of friends still teaching at the HS and was well liked and respected. I can’t speak for Hastert, but his friends that worked in the school that I knew were good and honest people. Obviously, this guy has turned out to be an absolute turd…he’ll get what’s coming to him.

That would require him to file a 1099 with the IRS and identify who he was "consulting" for.

I thought it might be an issue with Jim Durkin's brother as "The Coach's" judge, but apparently not. This video from about 3min to 8min is priceless.

The donor pays the gift taxes, so that would be Denny's problem too.

Oh boy, is this great.

Payments by Hastert Linked to Report of
Sexual Abuse
By MICHAEL D. SHEAR and MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT MAY 29, 2015
WASHINGTON — J. Dennis Hastert, the former Republican speaker of the
House of Representatives, was paying a man to not say publicly that Mr.
Hastert had sexually abused him decades ago, according to two people briefed
on the evidence uncovered in an F.B.I. investigation into the payments.
Federal prosecutors on Thursday announced the indictment of Mr.
Hastert on allegations that he made cash withdrawals designed to hide those
payments and for lying to federal authorities about the purpose of the
withdrawals.
The man — who was not identified in court papers — told the F.B.I. that
he had been inappropriately touched by Mr. Hastert when Mr. Hastert was a
high school teacher and wrestling coach, the two people said on Friday. The
people briefed on the investigation spoke on the condition of anonymity
because they did not want to be identified discussing a federal investigation.
The F.B.I. declined to comment.

“I felt a special bond with our wrestlers,” Hastert wrote in his 2004 memoir. “And I think they felt one with me.”

I fucking hated wrestling in high school. One year I got a fake note from the Dr. (Asthma). I was 6 foot 130lb wrestling some hairy fireplug on dirty mats.

don't touch me man!

Yeah the wrestlers were an odd group. They all had mullets and constantly dipped to kill their hunger pangs. The wrestling cheerleaders (called flashers at my school for some reason) were even worse. Almost bad enough to make a straight guy turn to the forbidden love.

I liked the Wrestler Walk where they'd keep their arms held out to their sides and bent.

Yes, a requirement. Even the 108 pounder would walk like that. With a snapple jar half filled with dip juice in non-dominant hand.

Sweaty men in tights groping on a mat. Dumbest sport ever. Should be classified as homosexual activity. (Not that there is anything wrong with that).

I had to look that up. According to Urban Dictionary:

ILS displays can be observed :
In the gym after an insecure male works out for 3-5 minutes.
On the beach when a single male approaches a group of females.
When a male enters a bar or dance club.
When a male is too scared to throw the first punch in a fight.
On the outside of mosh pits by the bouncer who’s had enough of sweaty punks bumping in to him.

Lots of good stuff coming out. I was somewhat down with the Libertarian argument that the FBI shouldn't have been on his back in the first place. Looks like a civil lawsuit filed by a former business associate re: misuse of public funds probably triggered a mandatory investigation and they stumbled upon the child rape scheme.

The Turkish angle, although unrelated, is even better.
