A little more than a quarter more salary.

You need a scientist to figure out that tough math.

Well I do not have the median handy but does the normalized figure equate to a more fair salary than some people think teachers receive?

According to that site the median is about $47k. So is $60k an acceptable teacher salary? Keep in mind that this is a national number and I am sure CPS teachers with any experience are above that figure.

Illinois site. Search by name or district.

http://www.familytaxpayers.org/salary.php

I know some teachers. Their salaries are good. I'll leave their names out of this but here is the band director (fairly well-known) at Hersey (note this is 2012).

Teacher Details

Name: Casagrande, Scott
Salary: $129,785
Position: High School Teacher
Full/Part Time: Fulltime
Percent Time Employed: 100%
Assignment: Instrumental Music
Years Teaching: 24
Degree: Master's
School Name: John Hersey High School
District Name: Township HSD 214

I am not trying to disrespect teachers or the work they do. But as a member of the private sector majority whose vacation weeks are single digit and has to fund his own retirement, I find it hard to sympathize with teachers when they strike for better pay and benefits, at least the ones in Northeast Illinois.

CPS does and I know Peotone does to. Some school districts went to that years ago so it could look like they didn't give raises. Though it is not the norm.

In part, from http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-p ... story.html

Quote:
Little-noticed pension perk for teachers widespread in Illinois

A brief but significant phrase appears about halfway through the 106-page teachers union contract in northwest suburban School District 21:

"The Board shall pay the entire amount of the staff member's contribution to the Teachers' Retirement System (TRS)."

What that means, according to administrators, is that nearly 500 teachers in the Wheeling-based district don't have to pay anything toward their pensions — a perk worth several million dollars. Instead, the district and its local taxpayers cover the cost of teachers' pension contributions — 9.4 percent of their earnings.

My district pays exactly ZERO of my pension. It comes out out of check every 2 weeks. And it's several hundred dollars every paycheck.

I know somebody whose district "pays" for their pension. They get less of a salary because of it. In fact, they have two completely separate salary scales to show the difference so that they can still prove that they are competitive with surrounding districts. Otherwise when teachers (or prospective) see their salary it looks significantly less.

Someone with 25 years of experience is making $129,000 a year. You're a dick if you're complaining about that.

That includes all taxable income. HS band directors are essentially the same as a coach that coaches multiple sports - they are getting extra stipends because of all of the extra rehearsals, performances, games, parades, etc outside of the regular school day.

Nice cherry pick.
There are many high paid teachers though - especially at the high school level in HS-only districts. Crazy thing is, HS teachers usually have the lowest amount of student-contact teaching time.

HS teachers make a ton of money, especially in a HS-only district and if they coach sports.
The rest of the teaching community dislikes that also.

I always laugh when that teachers site is referenced and people see what the top 10% make and assume ALL teachers make that. Keep in mind that those top salaried teachers are all advanced degreed high seniority teachers. A lot of people should maybe have rethought their own career choices and gone into teaching, its so lucrative and easy.

Teachers have a fiduciary responsibility to familyholders to maximize profits. Hooray for crab mentality.

You're right. It was just to illustrate his point that we seem to value coaches more than teachers.

Teachers unions should go on strike or something to try and turn this around.

I don't mind high earner. Teachers are valuable. What I have is a huge issue with how teacher pay is determined. A phsyics teacher who has the skills to teach college freshman physics (AP) should never be outearned by a gym teacher (even if he coaches).

Teacher pay appears to be free of any merit determination. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I fail to see how a Master's degree assists in "teaching" gym. But it does appear the Master's degree factors into their compensation.

I doubt many coaches have their entire salary covered by ticket sales and donations at least in Illinois.

For the record...I have no issue with teachers fighting for better salaries. Hell, I think they're nuts for choosing that profession. They deserve the hazard pay. I think it's bullshit to strike when they're supposed to be teaching the kids they supposedly care so much about.

I'm not sure anybody gets a master's degree in PE. It's probably out there, but it's not common.
Most have a masters in one of two things: administration or curriculum.
Teachers salaries are set up to increase based on two things: years of service and education. It doesn't matter what subject you teach.

Most districts offer stipends for activities that stretch beyond the regular school day/calendar. You know, for the people that don't have "1/3 of the year off".
High Schools offer crazy big stipends that an elementary district teacher would kill for.

Usually a strike happens well after the previous contract has expired.
A big district in my area worked for several years without a contract before threatening to strike, then the district magically settled.

A lot of teachers are overpaid but a lot of other people are overpaid too. You get what you can get. The union stuff complicates that a little bit though.

It still makes it hard to hear people talk about how hard teaching is and how low the pay is. Blame your union for your low pay if others are making $100k plus and you are making $40k.
