I would hope you all could be a little more sympathetic to the situation

also, the exchange discussion for Mr. Death or whatever he is called includes both Griner and an american former marine who now works in international security and was "only in russia to attend a friends wedding". I think we can all read between the lines on why he might be the lesser known but more important component

I think they should try to get her out and I think the US Govt is being unfairly maligned by people like LeBron who are too stupid to contextualize the situation.

They knew she had them in her bag. I'm sure she's always had them in her bag, but they looked the other way.

that's what people who know her have said, "Brittney doesn't go anywhere without her weed vape" so, yeah, she probably flew into Russia previously with them in her luggage and got through. Either through a happy accident or deliberate indifference (at the time).

This Viktor Bout ("boot") guy has been locked up since 2008 on a 25 year sentence. So not really a big deal to turn him loose. Sounds like he was a milo minderbinder type who sold weapons to both sides--including flying supply runs for the U.S. a couple times. I doubt he's going to go back to being an international arms dealer once he's released. But who knows. Assuming that's all Putin's asking for, which I doubt, especially if Putin's giving us both Griner and the marine spy guy.

Admitting you violate the law all the time, you just happened to get caught this time, doesn’t seem to help the cause.

Everything I've read said she needed to admit to it to get the process started, as fighting it would only prolong the inevitable.

Aren’t celebrities supposed to have friends who smuggle things in on their behalf?

At least I'm consistent. This may be the start of the United States and Russia teaming up to win the War On Drugs.

those always seem like patsies, intended to be caught, either to distract from the real smugglers moving through unmolested and/or to allow the local gendarmes to meet a quota/get a high profile foreigner bust for media purposes.

In some countries even less than that can get you executed.

In the US, that punishment seems insane sure. But she wasn't in the US. As the great Sidney Deane once said, "It's their court. It's their rules."

Yeah, I imagine they'll go high on Griner, if they gave her a nominal ( a year or whatever) sentence Russia wouldn't have much to negotiate for her release. Foreigners who get busted in other countries getting stiff sentences seems to be similar to why the SEC sent Martha Stewart away for something most people would get a fine and probation for or the IRS going after Wesley Snipes--they want the high profile scalp to nail to the wall to discourage others from doing the same thing.

isn't weed still illegal at the federal level in the United States? Griner must've gone through boarding procedures at a U.S. airport with her cache of weed vape cartridges. Possible the boarding TSA agents didn't screen the carts closely. Not sure how it works if you're departing from an airport in a state that has legalized weed. I assume TSA could still bust you but they probably let it through or at worst let you throw it away.

Singapore, and I think that is still a thing.

In Dubai, it used to be that you could be punished for having THC/hash in your system. Not even actively holding or using, but if it came up in a blood or urine test that was the same thing as possession to them. I think they have relaxed some of those rules recently- probably for tourism- but it just goes to show that there are parts of the world where you can get thrown in the slammer for something as innocuous as kissing your significant other in public.

Michael Fay, that kid was a fucker, needed caning. Although the account of the caning process made it sound brutal. It wasn't six quick whacks. It was some sort of Shohei Ohtani type coming up to bat on your ass; and then they'd wait in between strokes for maximum effect. I think he passed out a couple times during the process. They'd revive him and make sure he was fully conscious before delivering the next stroke. But, still, little fucker deserved the caning.

Doesnt sound quite as bad as you make it.

Quote:
Describing the caning day, Fay told Reuters he did not know the time had come for punishment when he was taken from his cell. He said he was bent over a trestle so his buttocks stuck out, with his hands and feet buckled to the structure. He was naked except for a protective rubber pad fixed to his back. The flogger, a doctor, and prison officials were also present.

Fay told Reuters the caner walked sharply forward three steps to build power. "They go 'Count one'—you hear them yell it really loud—and a few seconds later they come, I guess I would call it charging at you with a rattan cane." He noted that a prison officer guided him through the ordeal saying: "OK Michael, three left; OK Michael, two left; OK one more, you're almost done." Fay reported that when the fourth stroke was delivered he was immediately unbuckled from the trestle and taken to a cell to recover. The caning, which Fay estimated took one minute, left a "few streaks of blood" running down his buttocks, and seven weeks later, left three dark-brown scar patches on his right buttock and four lines each about half-an-inch wide on his left buttock. He said that the wounds hurt for about five days after which they itched as they healed. "The first couple of days it was very hard to sit," Fay reported, but he said he was able to walk after the caning

Another good example of nothing good comes from St Louis.

So even if we believe that Americans in general could go to Russia to work as district managers of McDonalds and be safe enough it's hard to really feel sorry for any women's basketball player who got involved in the dirty business of Russian women's basketball because it paid well and ended up with the surprising result of shady behavior by Russian authorities.

your last sentence is all I'm saying. Bring our people back. Hell, Reese Witherspoon would produce some heroic movie about the struggle if it was some young woman in prison because of drugs in southeast asia

and I say this knowing full well that she is going to mf the usa in front of cameras the moment she touches down on our soil

The only heroic movie I want to see about this event is an Iron Eagle remake with Rapinoe as Chappy and Jules as Doug Masters. The college swimmer with a dick can be Doug's love interest at home. I'm still working on filling the roles for Doug's crew of friends.

Griner played six years in Russia and returned home each time. What's different now? It's obvious - she's in jail because of politics. The drug thing is just a pretext.

Something less serious happened to someone I know - if Griner's case is a 8/10 out of seriousness (10 being the highest) due to the jail time she's facing, then this guy's case was a four. You get swept up in stuff, your documents get seized, you have no autonomy, it's demoralizing. All you can do is hope the government is doing something behind the scenes. GD is right here - regardless of her politics or whatever, just get these kinds of people home. Once they're home then feel free to resume the regularly scheduled bashing and whatnot.

It's also apparent that her arrogance led to her arrest. Her celebrity is helping her overcome it.

She may have been arrogant/stupid but it looks like she was going to be detained anyway. She's a decent asset you can leverage in this little tit for tat with the US. If Russia gets a prisoner back in any kind of exchange then they played it well. And if embarrassing the US by imprisoning one of its citizens was part of a larger response to the US' actions re: Ukraine then no amount of good manners and lawful behavior would have saved her.

Fwiw, she was arrested before the Ukraine invasion and she chose to leave & return to Russia after the US advised all citizens not to travel to Russia.

And the US should still try free her. But her actions are going to cause an actual criminal (or two or three) to be released from prison if our government is successful.

Probably.

But if she had drugs on her, flaunted having drugs on her, left Russia before the war, and then returned after the State Dept said don't go to Russia, doesn't she bear at least some responsibility? It can be politics and she can still be reaping what she sewed.

yes, but

Image

we can let another country treat our people justly, where the punishment meets the crime after there has been a fair finding, but not unjustly

like, I'd expect the US to try to step in if a us citizen were sent away for years for spitting on the ground in Singapore

this is what the embassy is for and they do this stuff quietly all the time...as do other countries to us.
