I have no policy answers. Policy is difficult, as there are always unintended consequences. Maybe more regulation is the answer. Maybe less is the answer.

What I don't get are the blanket statements about poor (and even middle class) people being lazy and trying to take from the rich. This is especially confusing coming from people who don't work or aren't wealthy.

That's the beauty of it all. Very few people ever look at the top 1% or 10% who are getting 51% of all income. They just point fingers at the 90% they're splitting 49% of all income with. Maybe they'll complain when it's 60-40.

I see that could be a solution. I am not sure though that I agree you cannot pass wealth along to your heirs. Just a simple example if I hit the powerball and am worth 200M why shouldn't I pass that to my kids/spouse upon death? Now if you want to cap for really obscene like +500M then I can listen.

What about small/medium size family businesses? Farms etc? The estate tax doesn't just hit people that make billions of dollars.

The cost of labor relative to the cost of the products being sold is over-estimated for the majority of products being discussed here. Even at McDonalds you might be talking $50 per hour difference. Sell a large pop for $1.50 rather than a dollar and it's not an issue. Also, people with more money spend more. I'd be willing to bet the Walmart and McDonalds would benefit greatly if low income households had a bit more discretionary cash.

The estate tax fucked the Robbie family. I'm sure they think it sucked.

I guess it depends on the estate. Say a Polish immigrants come to this country has a family leads a decent life and never buys a thing they don't need and never throws anything out because they can still use it. They save and are left with 750K when all is said and done. Should the gov get that to divide it up or the 3 kids and 8 grandkids get it? Maybe the grandkids can go to college or put a down payment on a house. It makes a difference for them because the 3 kids weren't college educated.

If you want to estate tax the hell out of somebody that is worth a billion dollars I get it. I'd rather they set up a plan or business that would actually help but whatever. The danger there is the gov will take your money and piss it away. I don't know if they'll stop til everybody, but the select few, have no money left.

I believe that the Estate Tax kicks in at $5M

But wealthy people inheriting money is disincentive to be productive. I thought that was your entire premise.

This is where you and I diverge. There are a whole lot of people unwilling to get off their ass and take their bigger slice. This is where the resentment rises when a person like myself pulls their shit out of the ashes of poverty and makes it. It is not always fair to be sure but not impossible. When you describe your pie and shares of it you leave out the little societal nuances that govern whether you get a part that have nothing to do with rich people.

The pie is not some theoretical zero sum game. Just like a quota. You cannot always make something fit a percentage. There are way too many variables that affect it.

90% of people aren't lazy and unwilling to work. If you're not in the top 10% I doubt you would call yourself lazy. Why can't you make it fit a percentage? This has been done for a century. The percentage of income for 90% of Americans has declined from 67% in 1982 to 49%. That didn't happen because the bottom 90% are lazy. It happened because the top 10% learned how to keep more without upsetting everyone. The bottom 90% actually point fingers at one another.

We are not getting each other. I did not say 90% of people are lazy. The disparity is a problem we agreed there. What I think I see is that the middle and lower class are stagnant. The upper as they started with more capital at the start of the race did astronomically better mostly through speculation which middle and low cannot do. The question still stands give me numbers. How do you equalize it? I gave my numbers but it is a trick question in this society. You cannot equalize it. I dare anyone to tell me how? Take 10% of the current managers and make them CEO's and take 25% of workers and make them managers. Will not change your pie one iota.

In America in order to make real money and I mean REAL money you need money. How many of us here had 20k to drop into Facebook as it went IPO. Do you realize even with that money you likely didn't even know the right people to be able to buy that if you wanted? It is a fucked system for sure but it is what it is.

Now what you gonna do? Aside from draconian socialistic measures it will not change your pie.

$1 large cokes is the reason for 73% of all visits to a McDonald's.

I don't think the pie is as finite as you think it is. I think the poor thru the middle class is under represented and the gov does not have their best interests in mind.

Whatever. That's not really the point.

... And that also sounds like a lot of BS. Do you seriously believe that 73% of people would go somewhere else if McDonalds raised the price of pop? How did they survive before this phenomenon ?

Their fair share......the reason they get as little as they do, is they don't deserve more. You can't screw off in school, fail to get the education needed for better paying jobs and expect better. That is, unless you are willing to do trade work or other jobs that involve more physical labor/effort. If you are not educated or willing to work hard at a labor related job....fuck you. You don't deserve better.

Well, Steve fucked off in school, failed to get a decent education needed for a better paying job and stole a business from his father while he was sick so he could advance.

Once again, cops aren't cops because they were honor roll students.

Wow. So physical/labor related jobs are generally high paying in your world? You truly are deserving of your reputation as an oblivious idiot.

There is a shocking amount of illiterate Americans. And I would wager that the majority of Americans don't know simple algebra. I saw people, grown men, STRUGGLING with things like determining Area and basic A.S.M.D. problems.

No. The wealthy obviously can afford to not only send their kids to college, but to any school they can qualify for admittance. But the poor are able to get need based scholarships and grants that can allow them to go to college free. I went to college with so many inner city kids that got grants and scholarships based on financial need and most were gone after a year. They flunked out and sometimes didn't even go to classes. They just took advantage of the government and partied for a year, before they flunked out. But they had the opportunity for a better life. They just pissed the opportunity away. No sympathy for them.

Yeah that idiot can't do basic math. And he owns a company he stole from his daddy.
A quick stat from the google machine...

32 million adults in the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population. 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read.

I am going to climb out on a limb and say 90% of Americans aren't uneducated. What percentage can't do 1st grade math?

There is a shocking amount of illiterate Americans. And I would wager that the majority of Americans don't know simple algebra. I saw people, grown men, STRUGGLING with things like determining Area and basic A.S.M.D. problems.

I saw a guy from Elmhurst struggling with adding and dividing.
