It reminds me a little of the time Trump got A$AP Rocky out of a Swedish jail. Should he have been in that jail for assaulting a guy? Of course!

But should his government fight for his right to do stupid shit overseas? Fuck yeah.

There seems to be a disconnect in this thread.

From what I can tell, every person thinks the United States should do what it takes to bring back our national sports hero Britney Griner.

The discussion is how much blame she takes in this and the cost to the United States in terms of who we will have to bring back.

Do we let other countries dictate our punishments to fit our crimes?

Multiple years for weed residue is a vape pen/cartridge is an insane punishment to us. Its not insane in other parts of the world. In fact, using/carrying the drug itself IS the insane bit in other parts of the world.

Griner was working and presumably residing in (at least temporarily) a foreign country and has to abide by their laws. Even in the resort areas I've been to in Jamaica and Mexico, I had a travel agent tell me more than once to brush up on some of the laws so we knew what we should or shouldn't do.

Again she has openly admitted to carrying these illegal in Russia items more than once. She returned to the country after the State Dept said not to. Sure she might be a political prisoner but if a regular joe willingly flew to a foreign country with a travel advisory out and where Marijuana was still very much illegal and said regular joe was boasting about getting high all of the time, they would be up a creek as well.

Point is is that she is not some innocent bystander. The US Gov't should look to help her for sure, but she is still culpable.

I thought this thread was about making fun of Lebron for saying Griner may not want to come back to the United States because of this.

She takes 100% of the blame. She broke a law in a place where it’s not good to break laws. And her friends’ defense was ‘why are they punishing her now, she breaks this law all the time?’

But that’s an obvious point so not as fun to talk about. It’s like how everybody knows you should repay your debts. What else is there to say?

I'm not sure if this is still true or not, but it used to be that you could drive around in Russia while drinking a beer. Because they considered anything under 8% or something like that to be food, and not an actual drink.

If some hockey Russian hockey player was here on vacation or playing in the NHL and got pulled over for a minor traffic infraction, and the officers noticed open Miller Lites in the car, so he got arrested and was now facing jail time, would we have the same sympathy for him as others have for Griner?

I wouldn't, because you have to abide by the country's rules and laws.

Correct. I'm also annoyed with the shaming of the government for her idiotic actions.

I asked the question earlier, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we learned she was a Russian asset many years from now. Her actions appear intentional in some ways.

She doesn't look any worse for wear for supposedly living on whatever they feed people inside a Russian prison. And what's up with the Crenshaw t-shirt? Heard some people question why she was flying commercial in the first place. These Russian teams are vanity projects for Russian billionaires; who you would think would fly the players over on their personal aircraft and not have to deal with the usual rigmarole of customs. Hard to believe the two Russian oligarchs (Andrei Kozitsyn and Iskander Makhmudov) paying Griner would allow her to be pinched like that. These players have personal drivers assigned to them the entire time they are in Russia and have everything taken care of while there. Either somebody dropped the ball on getting Griner in this time or NAS is on to something.

I think she thought she was more important than she is. It's not right, but obviously there would be more effort- or at least more outcry- to get Brad Pitt or LeBron or Oprah out than you or me or her.

Ask Frank. He seems to know everything about January 6.

I like the language they use about entering a public building. When they want to imprison political enemies it's called "breaching."

You posting nonsense about people being indefinitely held without being charged means I know everything about Jan 6th?

First, this is a year old. Second, it says some are being held WITHOUT BAIL, not without being charged. If you're going to be all cocky and post FACT CHECK and say somebody is wrong, it would behoove you to actually read the story you're posting.
Quote:
So we can Verify, yes, some people arrested for crimes on January 6th are still being held in jail without bail, all of which are being housed at the D.C. Jail.
And since this is a year old, who knows if the subjects in this story are still being held or not.

For reference, you original quote and my response was; viewtopic.php?f=47&t=128310&start=120#p3827286

It's a fact though. Because you don't know what you're talking about doesn't change that.
Who has been held indefinitely without being charged over January 6th?
My question still stands and to this point, has not been answered.

Being held WITHOUT BAIL is not the same thing as being indefinitely held with no charges.

So much for being well read.

Maybe Metta World Peace will weigh in next:

Lebron might send Westbrook to Russia in exchange for Griner.

LBJ: "YO, Russ, lissen man, we traded you"

WB: "Nets for Kyrie? Suns for Ayton? Heat for Herro?"

LBJ: "UMMC Ekaterinburg, but first you have to do 10 years in a Russian prison"

Not at all. I'm guessing I share very little politically with either of them. I'm asking if others here feel that way and I'm asking if it's okay when we do it to our own citizens.

Again I'm not familiar with the person you wrote about. I assume this is someone mistreated at home? If so this is far from an apples to apples comparison. Being incarcerated overseas and subject to prosecution by a hostile country involved in a proxy war against your own country is way different than someone facing legal issues in their own home where they have presumably access to their own lawyers or court appointed ones.

I would have agreed with you up until January 6. Some of those people are definitely political prisoners being denied due process right here in the U.S. The government refuses to share video with the defense.
