Why not give your employer an extra 50 hours of work this week if it isn't a big deal?

I'm not picking on pittmike here, but it seems like a lot of people are ignoring the title of the thread and/or are unfamiliar with the business practices of Mr. Jeff Bezos. Seacrest acted as if timing a bathroom break was some crazy exaggeration. Scorehead can't believe there is an expectation that an employee is slacking at less than 80 hours a week. There is plenty of information available on Amazon. Our own W-Z has even written about it more than once speaking form personal experience.

Also, long hours have always been common in the financial and legal sectors, but it differs from these tech overlords squeezing their employees in that it's most often not a flat out demand, but rather a step on the way to partnership. In those types of businesses you can make partner in two basic ways- bring in the clients or work your fucking ass off. There is a place for the person who does neither.

Finally, forcing managers to create a bell curve on employee performance was a disaster at Microsoft and it will eventually be a disaster at Amazon as well.

I understand it perfectly but bad business practices, unfair business practices may not necessarily be oppressive business practices.

I couldn't do it but I'm not going to criticize Bezos because he is a demanding boss. He is exploiting the ambitions of his workforce. That is the essence of capitalism. He is essentially using the personal ambitions of his staff for the betterment of his company.

I used to date this chick that was an attorney for Winston and Straub? law firm. I can recall her working hrs similar to what you're describing. One night I spoke with her at 2 o'clock A.M. on a Saturday night. She was still filing and writing law briefs. She was about 27 at the time and trying to move up so she figured that was required. I don't think they ever let her handle a case, yet she was willing to put up with their bullshit because she believed that was what she had to do. She eventually left for less money at a smaller firm because she couldn't deal with the demands and wanted more responsibility.

It seems like a lot of people don't realize that much of the tech industry is designed to control, track, and automate all human behavior. Luckily, they'll soon have robots to do all the work.

The thing is that in most cases though, that is to attain performance bonuses or they get a cut of their business. The new trend seems to be taking salaried employees(based on a 40 hour work week) and expecting them to volunteer to work an extra 20-50 hours with no benefit besides good reviews. The government would be bringing the hammer down on these companies if they were doing that for hourly employees but it is perfectly acceptable to do it to a salaried employee. Some will even say that the salaried employee loves working 90 hour weeks and wouldn't want to have 40-50 hours of more free time!

Exactly. And the answer isn't simply "go work somewhere else". Once this paradigm is a firmly established and accepted practice, there will always be some douchebag who answers e-mails at 2:00 in the morning and everyone else will be measured against that bootlicker.

You have serious anger problems.

As soon as you are on the losing side of the discussion, which usually happens early, you lash out, often passive aggressively, then take your ball and go home. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

The interesting thing is that most of us choose to make less money while not working 80-90 hour weeks. There are jobs that only have a requirement to work on nights and weekends.

For some reason though, working one job, for 80-90 hours a week, is considered just fine even though you are uncompensated for at least half of that.

And why isn't the answer "to go work somewhere else"? There are numerous blue collar jobs that pay OT and go unfilled day after day. Where does it say that if I go to college, I'm supposed to get a job in an office paying six figures?

The same place it says that employees should work as many hours above 40 that employers think is correct.

It is a new trend to manage employees to the second. Or at least it's Taylorism come back into vogue. I can tell from the stuff you're writing that you aren't familiar with Amazon and its business practices. You should do a little research and we can have a better conversation.

Also, you may not be familiar with the HR software that is rapidly becoming the big kid on the block and will eventually replace Peoplesoft. Bezos was an early investor in Workday and it has already begun incorporating the time management and constant employee review components into a product that most companies will likely be using within ten or fifteen years. Workday Rising! Go, rich guys, go! Fuck the workingman!

And I have no idea what you're talking about in your last sentence or how it applies to this topic.

And why isn't the answer "to go work somewhere else"? There are numerous blue collar jobs that pay OT and go unfilled day after day. Where does it say that if I go to college, I'm supposed to get a job in an office paying six figures?

I'm familiar with Amazon and their work practices. Eventually, they will sink or swim on their merits.

When you have a moment, call someone that is a college professor and they can tell you about the entitled nature of many of today's students. Or look up the slew of articles about college grads living with mom and dad because they won't take a job outside their field of study. And would never consider doing anything other than what their degree states. The world still needs ditch diggers and garbage men and many are making damn near six figures. But hey, I won't take a job that pays well and OT over 40. I'll take the first office job and bitch later about my salary.

People have choices. Many more then you are willing to allow for.

Corporations are greedy.

Many Unions are greedy as well.

Many people work hard.

Many have no interest in doing so.

I work from home CoF.

My garbageman told me that his local Waste Management office is short seven drivers daily.

Starting pay is $22.50 and hour plus bennies.

$32.77 per hour after three years, or even sooner.

He turns down some OT every week and will still make $95K this year. And his job is 95% automated.
