Who is more important to society?

Obviously teachers, I dont think anyone would disagree with that.

You don't read this board enough. We worship cops, but hate teachers.

They perform a job far more important to our future and get absolutely no respect. Teachers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cops

I agree.

So why is that we blame police for the failure of kids to grow up right when you yourself agree that teachers are more important. Even the most poorly behaved kids are exposed way more to teachers than they are to police. I think we may actually be finding one of the real culprits for the USA's prolonged societal fall here. And its not law enforcement.

None of us deny that there are bad parents, teachers and schools. None of that has anything to do with over policing in schools and in poor communities. There are 360 million police contacts every year and on 0.001 are arrests for violent crimes.

If .001 percent of police contacts were for violent crimes every year then that means there are only 3,600 police contacts for violent crimes every year. That's not plausible and clearly made up. You're working with bad info, clean up where you get your shit and maybe we can talk about this honestly.

That actually would be 360k. The actual number is less than 500k.

OK so you meant .1%. Even then, highly unlikely even if we are being disingenuous and saying things like child prostitution, human trafficking, DUI, reckless driving, meth dealing/manufacture, domestic disputes, etc. aren't violent crimes. Which by some technical definition may hold varying degrees of truth depending on the crime but none of which can in any way considered "victimless".

By the way, the rates at which things things happen in the USA are usually four or five times what they are in other parts of the post-industrial western world. So you're gonna have a real difficult time convincing me that 359,000,000 of the 360,000,000 police interactions ever year are just cops giving people a hard time.

No respect? They have morons like you cheering them on when they strike and hold the futures of children hostage so they can get better guaranteed salaries and pensions, then those same morons turn around and call cops coddled.

Your math is off. If it was .1% that would be 36 million.

There are 10 million arrests every year and according to available data 80% are for petty crimes. Disorderly conduct is the most popular one. I imagine most of the contacts are traffic related.

When was the last police labor dispute? Even in a recession we provide more money to police just like we do the military. Why? Because people like you scrape their knees daily for police and think you are smarter than all teachers.

Its really hard to do this if you're going to get basic math so wrong. 36 million is 1% of 360 million, you can verify this very simply by multiply 36 million by 100.

.1% of 360 million is 360,000. If you dont believe me you can use a calculator to prove it.

The militarization of police has coincided with a dramatic dropoff in crime, like it or not.

If they were related then we would have seen improvement in some of the over policed communities.

From a statistical point of view we have. But this could also be because the statistics are largely fraudulent, which I have a strong feeling may actually be the case.

Shouldn't worship any profession. And there's not a goddam thing wrong with being skeptical about your kids' teacher. They get no automatic respect because they have a degree in education. There's been times I've asked a teacher at a conference how she teaches a certain concept and I get back a bunch of stuttering. These are the teachers that send a bunch of homework home. These are the teachers that piss and moan about parents not being involved. I already have a job and I don't want a second one teaching. I'm the homework checker, not the homework teacher. I mean, I'll do it, but don't expect me to sit quietly at a conference. I want to get down to the bottom of why little nardi is clueless about his homework. Is it little nardi or is it Ms Ashley? So I ask pointed questions that aren't appreciated by the teachers that don't know what they're doing.

CPD hasn't had a contract for three years. By the time the city gets around to negotiating it will just cover the back pay for previous years and they will be starting over again.

On the positive side, at least you proved the importance of competent math teachers to society.

And I believe 1% of 360 million is 3.6 million not 36 million. 36 million times 100 is 3.6B. I think, but it’s late.

Other than Dennis, have you people figured out how to math yet?

1% = 1/100 = .01 or just scoot the decimal point (and commas) two places to the left.

.1% = 1/1000 = .001 or just scoot that DP (and commas) three places to the left

YW

No respect?

Name another job where a good percentage of your customers give you a thank you card and gift 2 or more times each year.

I have plenty of respect for teachers despite the experience of the last few months. They are always on the list of people thrown into the regular "they are heroes" public conversation.

Your feelings aside, to say there hasn't been a, years long, concerted effort to put down teachers in this country, is not being honest.

As my kids finished private high school, we were paying about $11,000 per kid. But the big difference is those teachers are way underpaid relative to the public school market. I don’t think the answer is paying teachers a whole lot less. In fact, the Finland model that has worked so well is paying them a shit done more. But in return, it is very tough to become a teacher. Top talent there flocks to the industry because of the pay and prestige much like doctors in the U.S.

I was thinking that this is a model that can work for police as well. Don't defund them, fund them more and have heightened expectations from hiring on up

The model for civil servants is Singapore. My understanding is that they have to pass rigorous tests, be well educated, and then are paid well for that. Since teaching is a critical part of society, that is the best place to start. And yeah, the police forces need a lot of professionalization.

teachers are so overrated. You could replace them with a basic cable subscription and do the same job.
