There are some good quotes about in here. But just because you are not shot, punched, or stabbed it doesn't mean that the violence doesn't affect your life if you live in Chicago. And nearly everyone was affected or forced to stay in during mass looting.

As we are entering into what looks like a recession or a depression, and rule of law seems to be flagging I don't know how anyone can say it will be fine in a few weeks or months.

We’ll probably downsize to a townhouse but my wife wants to be around our kids so assuming they are in the area, so will we. We are planning on buying a second home in northern Michigan in 9 years where we will spend May to October during our retirement years.

Have to love the left wing guys who leave a state run by Dems to go to a cheaper state run by Republicans.

Oh the irony.

What irony? Arizona is turning blue because of people like me moving here. Plenty of assholes like you two here in AZ, but they are slowly losing their grip.

Cool story bro. So what you're saying is that you liked the low cost loopholes the Republicans had, but now you're going to get your weirdo liberal stink all over them so you can ruin more states?

Or are you all old white people that claim to be Democrats, but deep down really lean further to the right because you're white?

Christ...I'm a moderate, but you nuts on both sides make me absolutely crazy.

You two are so mad at each other. It's Friday man.

It's not people like Deacon Blues that are changing places like AZ. It's young people. They're much likelier to move.

I decided in 2008 that I wasn't going to retire in Illinois, so that was before the property taxes went sky high. Made the move about 15 months ago, after a decade of research and planning. Three reasons:

- Much less cold weather. I don't mind lows around 30. I do mind lows of -6. The low all last winter here was 23, and it snowed twice.
- Better part time work prospects for when I leave a corporate setting.
- Lower overall expenses - I actually ended up moving to an area a little more expensive than I originally planned, but it's still about 15% cheaper than where I lived out near Spaulding and Dr. Ken. Costco gas is 54 cents a gallon cheaper than Bolingbrook, for example. $8 here, $25 there, 25% cheaper auto insurance, it starts to add up.

I did know that I'd have to give up Chicagoland's ethnicity which I really miss, and now with COVID I do miss being in downtown Chicago a couple of days a month. Even after my father eventually passes away, I will come to Chicago 4-5 times a year to see family and hang out in the city.

Chicago sucks. All its charm is long gone, its just a soulless shithole like everywhere else in America. Nothing about it is fun or tasteful or unique anymore.

Gharish developments are plotted by mundane formula's meant to milk the most money out of the yuppies while the rest of the city is basically left to rot. Even the shithole crime-ridden parts of the city aren't any fun. The food, which forever was legitimately awesome, isn't unique anymore. Everything is low quality, a race to bottom between everyone in the city.

interesting. like 25 years ago i had an opportunity to move to Raliegh area. It was pretty nice and peaceful but was still somewhat of a ho-dunk town back then. If I made the move I could have probably lived a much easier life than what i decided to do.

Then also had a chance to move to Charlotte like 5 years ago. Had a an old friend opening a business there who needed some help. But never went out to Charlotte to check it out.

Thanks for this—well thought out plan, and clearly illustrates why MANY are leaving. The money saved could be an extra vacation or two each year, and I do want to travel some in retirement. I know Asheville is a pretty popular destination currently.

Not so sure about this anymore. When I lived in Lincoln Park for about 10 years, I never worried about crime. But a guy was shot on Oak Street recently. 20 or so shots fired near the W hotel on LSD. The Gold Coast/Mag Mile/Lincoln Park are no longer immune from random crime. An old guy was recently pulled out of his vehicle in a car jacking. A recent shooting in Grant Park. Crime seems to be spreading.

Seems to be?

My family liked our time in Arkansas. It was a great place to raise young kids. Not for everyone, though. If you like a lot of entertainment, social life, etc. Its probably not for you. But if you like the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, golf, hiking, etc. It really is a good place to live. The cost of living is low and the affordability of a home is excellent, especially right now with the interest rates being what they are.

Haven't lived in IL since 2010 and will never move back. The biggest draw Chicago had may be going away if remote working sticks around. RIP to the pensions when any professional earning 6 figures can do their job in another state.

The pensions are already dead, and every elected politician knows it.

i know i'm a weirdo, but honestly one of the biggest draws about the city to me is concerts since that's one of my favorite things. You can pretty much guarantee any artist who is touring is going to make a stop in Chicago. But that doesn't appear like it's coming back anytime soon, if ever. If that's the case, i wouldn't be opposed to moving out of the state once my parents are both gone

I wish I could show you the full concert slate for 2020 before everything got canceled, but you don't have to live in the city anymore to get good concerts
