I wrestled vs Yorkville in middle school and 2 years of HS. Good thing Denny was busy convincing the state of IL to buy all of his farm land at a premium in order to put in his personal highway at that point in time. At least it gave him enough money to pay off his diddling.

I wrestled against Yorkville in HS too. I assume Hastert was the coach but it didn't mean anything to me then. I lost three times in one day in a triple dual. Yorkville and Fenton were two of the opponents. I don't remember the other one.

Anyway, I haven't been following this story too closely, but it seems pretty silly to spend money prosecuting a guy for lying to the FBI in this instance. Why the fuck are they asking him questions? Nobody is accusing him of ducking taxes. Once they found out he wasn't actually "structuring" they should have apologized and left him alone. If he wants to give millions to some guy who isn't extorting him and isn't complaining about being molested, I don't see why it's anyone's business.

A couple of things:

1) Parents find it helpful to know when a child molester is in the neighborhood.
2) Hastert was being investigated under provisions from the Patriot Act. The very act he sheperded through Congress.
3) He lied to the FBI It's a federal offense
4) lawmakers should be held to at least a modicum of the standard that they require us to follow

1) But nobody has actually accused him of molesting anyone, let alone proved he did so. All we have is hearsay from the sister of a dead guy who didn't come forward until this other shit broke.
2) That part is quite delicious.
3) Yeah, I know. But is prosecuting liars for lying about questions they probably should never have been asked a good use of government resources?
4) Who could argue?

Why doesn't matter....they had cause and found enough to indict him.

Whether it's a political witch hunt or not, had he kept his nose clean he wouldn't be in this situation. Same goes back to Clinton's impeachment. i don't care how insignificant the Monica Lewinsky stuff was, he lied under oath and should have punished just as any one else would be punished.

We know that there are facts that the government is not sharing.

He was caught lying because he was being investigated for structuring.

Clinton was impeached for lying about his personal behavior while being investigated for something else. Should Hastert be held to a lower standard?

Here's the odd part:

Do you think that the FBI would have done a damn thing if he just told the truth?

Hastert isn't in office.

Anyway, I'm not sympathetic to Hastert. I just think the government is overreaching. It all seems pretty pointless. Why is it the government's business what he did with money he earned and paid taxes on?

If you're telling me this indictment is over him saying "I used the money for myself" instead of "Go fuck yourself", we should be able to agree the whole thing is silly.

Because he made it their business when he chose to lie about it.

And being in office isn't a requirement for being charged with lying to the FBI.

Denny Hastert was being investigated under rights granted to the government BY HIMSELF.

See above. The feds stumbled upon it when someone filed a civil suit against him re: misuse of public funds.

Lots of good stuff coming out. I was somewhat down with the Libertarian argument that the FBI shouldn't have been on his back in the first place. Looks like a civil lawsuit filed by a former business associate re: misuse of public funds probably triggered a mandatory investigation and they stumbled upon the child rape scheme.

I'm going to read the links posted by Danny B, but as far as I know, he isn't being indicted for child molesting. There isn't even an accuser, is there?

He was indicted for lying.

And would you even find it troubling if he told the truth and the government walked away silently from a child molester?

Nobody is actually accusing him of being a child molester. I find it more disturbing that the government can question what he (or me or you) does with money he earned and paid tax on.

So, what's the deal? Was he being blackmailed? If so, does that discredit the allegations?

Has there been more than one allegation?

hard to believe you could be such a sick motherfucker that you would have gay sex with a kid. I mean how low can you go? seriously? I can comprehend why you might kill somebody - maybe they deserved it. but preying on kids, man, I don't even think Satan approves of that shit.

Still trying to figure out who Individual A is, as it doesn't sound like this woman or her brother (who died of AIDS in 1995).

I kind of agree with JORR in that having the government looking over your money is scary. But it's also sad that a guy like this -- a small-town wrestling coach -- could be worth multi-millions thanks solely due to his work in government.

It doesn't seem like he's been blackmailed. It appears there was a mutual agreement between Hastert and Individual A. I have never actually heard anyone accuse him of molesting Individual A, but obviously, that's an easy assumption to make and many are making it. Now suddenly there's a woman who never said a word before the story broke coming forward about how her late brother said he was molested by Hastert.

And yes, Seacrest, we do understand the irony of him being caught by the same anti-American law he himself helped pass. I don't think anyone here is crying for Denny Hastert.

Do we have A, B and now C for 'coach' Hastert?

I would have said his friends will come to his rescue....but if we are at 3 people now....just guessing his friend list is going to shrink in a hurry.
