Being a public company is a pre-requisite as the board of a public company has a fiduciary responsibility. Privately held companies do not carry such a responsibility and can act on the whims of their owner. This is why Chik Fil A and Hobby Lobby have and can take some very controversial decisions which have prevented them from operating on Sundays and also have made some customers unwilling to shop there. If they were publicly held, the boards would not allow the company to take such a position and the CEOs in question would have been fired for them.

As I have previously mentioned, the founder of Chik Fil A put in his will that the company cannot issue an IPO as doing so would lead to the reversal of his policies due to such fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders.
