You know, we go back and forth on this board with Cubs/Sox bullshit, but I think underneath all of it we respect each other for our long held allegiances. And I respect a real Yankee fan who came about his allegiance in a natural way. If your dad was from New York before moving to Glencoe and raised you as a Yankee fan I have no issue with that. But that isn't the case for most of these asswipes. They're goofs who wanted to pick a winner, front-running nitwits who refused to root for the Cubs or White Sox.

They remind me of the guys at tournament time running around in Duke gear. Who the fuck would pull for Duke unless you attended school there? It's like rooting for General Motors to wipe out Tesla. Duke doesn't even have townies. I think that's at least partially behind bernstein's contempt for Illini Nation. He knows a kid growing up in Durham is likely to be a Tar Heels fan. Take off that stupid Duke jersey!

Anyway, I was at the Sox game on Monday and I was surrounded by these fake Yankees fans. I mentioned to the guys I was with that this might be the worst Yankee lineup of my lifetime. One of these Yankee goofs said, "That Sox lineup isn't too great either." I said, "Yeah, I know, but I'm a Sox fan, I've seen a lot of shitty lineups, this is far from the worst. Is that what it's come to for Yankee fans- our lineup is only a little worse than the White Sox?" I doubt that was his thought the first time he put on a Yankee cap. There's nothing sadder than a front-runner when the team isn't in front.

I see more of this in the NFL with people who are Cowboys and 49ers "die-hards", but yeah....I'm sure 10 years ago, it was pretty easy to declare yourself a Yankees fan.
I would imagine there are many "die-hard" Cubs fans in Phoenix, Tampa, Miami, etc.... that have absolutely zero tie to Chicago.

I never take enjoyment out of the Cubs being bad, but I do love seeing the yankees suck.

A lot of Chicago Packers fans are the same way.

For some reason they don't root for the Bucks though.

Yankees fans in the summer, Hawks fans in the winter.

Who cares? I'm a Vikings fan. I have no attachment to the twin cities.

If you're young...and you're getting into a sport...maybe you fall in love with a certain player...maybe you enjoyed all the home runs those Yankees teams hit.

Be a fan of whichever team you want. As long as it is one team and you don't switch back and forth. Nas.

I don't hate you because you pull for a horrible franchise.

I am a weaker man than Dr. Ken, Peoria Matt or leash who root for clown franchises in both the Bear and Cub.

When you add Dr. Ken's Illini interests I'm surprised he still cares for sports.

The Cub is enough for me.

Jorr you make a good point. There has to be a level of respect among Chicago baseball fans.

If you're a Sox fan:
Sure, you're the taller midget because you've actually won the only thing that matters in any of our life times. Besides that you have to endure:
-Half empty stadiums when you go to a game.
-An "elegant" neighborhood around said stadium.
-Being the distinct minority fan base in the Chicagoland.
-Watching smaller market division rivals dominate you for years on end, the Twins for many years and now the Royals.
-Low payrolls leading to a lightning in a bottle free agent signings.

If you're a Cubs fan:
-You have the unique honor of over a century of no titles.
-You piss in a trough at games.
-Your stadium was literally crumbling, a metaphor if there ever was one.
-Your admittedly full stadium contains a fanbase that does not know who is starting today's game.
-Said fan base believes in curses and Bartmans as the reason they cannot win.

And yet, there is an extreme loyalty and bunker mentality within each fan base.

Agree 100%.

I will never understand how or why someone roots for a team that is across the country unless you grew up there. May as well just throw darts at a list of teams and pick one.

I'm not sure how anyone could be a true blue Bears fan with how little regard the team seems to have for the fans, and how little they seem to care about sustained success.

I've been a Vikings fan since I watched my first NFL game. I'm an interested Bears observer, but I don't actively root for them. I have actively rooted against them. Upset Bears fans are entertaining.

With ease of watching out-of-market games it makes more sense than ever.

No point in watching bad play.

Ok, because before you claimed you were a Bears fan and a Vikings fan.

This is a change.

At least you didn't pick a team that has ever won anything.

- When is the last time you've gone to a game? The Wrigley crowds are extremely observant and intelligent in the last two years. Many fans there for the experience have been priced out or do not have the ticket availability they once had. For instance...the entire stadium gave Contreras a standing ovation during his first Wrigley start as he walked out to the bullpen to warm up Lackey before the game. The fact that people paid attention to that...and knew who he was... that is a recent phenomenon.
- Uh...no. Maybe 1% of the fanbase. I believe it may be the fanbase on the other side of town that believes it.

How long have you been a Cubs fan?

Since I was a yute.

I didn't grow up with cable and WGN always had the Cubs.

My Dad grew up a Packers fan, they were great as a yute and always on in Chicagoland market. So I became a fan.

I bet the NFL has the most non-geographically tied fans because of the wide availability to watch games.

I'm a fan in that I watch every Bears game and follow the team closely. But I don't root for them to win. I don't buy the merchandise. I don't attend the games. My allegiance isn't split.

edit: But either way, JORR is correct. The NFL is more like a TV show than a sport to me.

In the same post you call Cubs fans intelligent, and then say a mere 1% of them believe in curses. You can't have it both ways, IMU.

I could picture you being very superstitious.

I highly doubt a majority of Cubs fans believe in curses, but its certainly a lot more than 1%
