Did anyone else get this email? 1 TB cap, exceed it and you pay overage. Quote: Introducing a Terabyte Internet Experience
We’re writing to let you know that we will be trialing a new XFINITY Internet data usage plan in your area. Starting August 1, 2016, your monthly XFINITY Internet service will include a terabyte data usage plan (that’s 1,024 GB). With 1 terabyte of data you can stream about 700 hours of HD video, play more than 12,000 hours of online games, or download 600,000 high-res photos in a month. If you believe you will need more data, we also offer an Unlimited Data Option. Your average data usage for the past three months is 77 GB, so based on your historical usage, with this new plan you can stream, surf, game, download or do whatever you want online, worry free. Less than 1% of Comcast XFINITY Internet customers use a terabyte of data or more in a month. Details of the Terabyte and Unlimited Plans: 1 Terabyte (TB) included/month If 1 TB is exceeded, $10 for each additional data block of up to 50 GB/month $200 overage limit - no matter how much data you use Unlimited Data $50 per month No overage charges — no matter how much data you use You can also track and manage your usage so there are never any surprises about how much data you use. Here are a few tools you can use: Usage meter – Monitor how much data you have used with our Data Usage Meter. Data Usage Calculator - Estimate your data usage with our Calculator Tool. Simply enter how often and how much you typically use the Internet, and the calculator will estimate your monthly data usage. Notifications - Should you approach a terabyte of usage, we will send you a courtesy "in-browser" notice and an email letting you know when you reach 90%, 100%, 110%, and 125% of that amount. Usage notifications will not be sent to customers who enroll in the unlimited data option. Learn more about notifications here. For the small percentage of customers who use more than a terabyte of data, we will offer them two courtesy months so they will not be billed the first two times they exceed a terabyte while they are getting comfortable with the new data usage plan. If you have any questions about the new data usage plan, please see our FAQs. Thank you for being an XFINITY Internet Customer. Sincerely, John Crowley Regional Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region Please note that this is a consumer trial. Comcast may modify or discontinue this trial at any time. However, we will notify you in advance of any such change. |

I love how they make it seem like they are giving you some awesome new internet experience. Like a new service that is an upgrade or something. |

they're pretty much doing this everywhere because they wanna fight back against the "cord cutters" getting rid of cable and using just internet stuff in lieu of cable TV. i'm pretty sure the notice at&t sent me told me that if i sign up for direcTV all the newfound data caps go away =D |

Aren't we glad the government gave them all that money to build up an infrastructure to then cap your data usage for literally no logical reason? Data caps for mobile data make sense because there is a harder limit on the actual bandwidth of wireless communication. |

I received the message. This hurts cord cutter families and households with roommates. Getting to 1TB as a couple or solo is hard. |

How the hell does someone get to 1TB in data in a month? Even when I was downloading music and HD movies like crazy years ago, I didn't get anywhere close. Now that I stream Spotify and Netflix / Amazon, I doubt I even get to 100 GB. |

Everyone has their own laptop and if the TV is on, 99% of the time it's Netflix. |

How many folks have 90" TV's that actually take advantage of a 4K resolution? Or how many people sit 3 feet away from their 55" 4K TV? This would be similar to having a 15" widescreen monitor at 1080p. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference from 720p. Yes, 4K is technically a better picture. But not in 95% of household applications. Look...I'm a gadget guy. I love this shit. But I'm also practical. |

The other problem is that this is almost certainly not where they will stop. Next will be 100gb and then you have to pay more. But hey, at least they got billions from the government for infrastructure so they can make completely unnecessary data caps! |

Ummm...they originally said 250GB and now it is 1TB. They've done the opposite of what you're suggesting Rick. |

IMU wrote: Ummm...they originally said 250GB and now it is 1TB. We saw it happen with cable tiers. They moved channels to higher paying tiers to get people to pay more. They've done the opposite of what you're suggesting Rick. This just sets it at "Hey, it's only the data hogs that want it all" and then once customers have accepted that this is ok they will extend it to lower levels. The ultimate goal is to turn internet service into a system with many different tiers like they have with cable. |

Got mine too. It also says we use 453 GB per month. Thanks to son #2. Funny, my other son who lives in Portland, where Google Fiber is (or is coming), says comcast gives him free super-duper speed (whatever it is called) where here we have to pay for it, plus no cap. |

One thing to consider is that we are paying for all that fiber that went in the ground in the early 00's before Enron et al...fucked us all over. I've said this many times before. What the fiber companies did is build the equivalent of 10 Kennedy Expressways, but only had the customers to drive on one. Then they all went bankrupt. The company of 15 that I worked at designing the routes all throughout the loop, west loop, near southeast side, and river north area was owed $1M total from various fiber companies. It killed the industry for over a decade and fucked the company for a few years. |

Less than 1% of Comcast XFINITY Internet customers use a terabyte of data or more in a month. I had to open my Comcast.net email for the first time ever for this. In fairness, I had to download a bunch of Steam games over the last three months. So my "normal" average is less, though maybe not 100GB. a retard wrote: Got mine too. https://www.newsbreak.com/news/21083946 ... -from-2021 Not sure why Illinois isn’t on the list. Just got my email from Comcast today that I went over. First month is just a warning so I don’t have to pay extra this month but I can’t see any less usage next month. Nice of Comcast to pitch in for the cause. Perfect time to whack everyone with a usage cap. Maybe I just tell the kids they can’t use the internet on their remote days or my wife is only allowed to teach 1/2 her classes. Unfortunately AT&T service goes as far as the neighbors house. 10 years they still can’t extended it 1 fucking house. Fuck them too. |

Data caps for mobile data make sense because there is a harder limit on the actual bandwidth of wireless communication. only because they arent investing enough. they didnt want to add more towers, so they invested in 5G, which is only going to have a real impact when everyone buys a new home router that is actually a 5G micro cell. Yes, you will be paying for half of the new cellphone infastructure. That's what 5G is all about. |
