There was some accidental email that went out to what must be half of my company across the country today. What has ensued is perhaps the funniest and most depressing thing I've witnessed in some time. There are thousands of people on this email chain, and people keep replying to all to tell everyone else to stop replying to all. It's like lord of the flies. People are trying to be funny, others are chewing each other out. There are clearly old people who aren't sure how email works who are still replying all to the original email. And there are threats of discipline to some of the people who are responding (but the manager of that person is replying to all to tell them that?) Chaos... sheer chaos... I created a folder to track how many replies this string has. There's 60 at the moment. I hate the Reply to All function. It should just be removed. |

There was that I love you virus or whatever it was called. In any case, it got through our filters, and it was basically an attachment of a supposedly naked woman. It sent a reply to everyone in the company that opened it. So you knew what idiots were clicking on a naked pic jpg in their work e-mail. Of course one idiot in our division fell for it, and it wasn't a surprise. http://money.cnn.com/2000/05/05/technology/loveyou/ |

Reply to All is wonderful simply for the times where someone tries to bitch about the original sender to one of the recipients but accidentally replies all. That usually leads to 3 or 4 days of hilarity. |

People are getting heated now. Some guy just wrote a diatribe about how this has been an interesting observation of human behavior and how we are a flawed species. Bring out the big guns! |

Bring out the big guns! I'm not on the email chain, regardless, this gentleman is on to something. I've often thought that a 4 Way Stop was the true look into human failure....maybe it's really this email chain. |

I think all email chains are a true look into human failure. 4-way stops are up there too. |

This is amazing. It's getting worse. There are now corporate communications going out requesting not to reply to the email chain as it is slowing down the email servers. This is like a denial of service attack. |

How many replies is the email at now? Hundreds and hundreds. I came back from lunch to 182 unread emails, 10 or so of which were legitimate. This is insane. There are literally thousands of people on the email chain. Do you know if there's some way to prevent against this sort of thing? |

It was funny at first, but now it's completely disruptive. |
