Stop trying to convince me that this was a good trade for the White Sox.

They can't. They seem to have thought Illini sports broadcasts are a good idea.

You guys are making this trade worse than it is. It could be awful but so could any trade. Huge upside, too.

Denied. ...if the Sox were run by competent people, they could have grabbed a better deal. It is what it is, dumbasses at the helm got a decent haul, not a huge haul.

Nas makes a good point.

Because Bernstein is leading the charge that it's REALLY SMART, that's the station's position. I heard tranny. Joe O was in. Bernstein said, "Are you hearing from the dumb Sox fans, Joe?" To which Joe responded with a "Yeah. They're dumb. Not smart like us."

Truth is, I don't know if it's a good trade or not. Don't know if they could have done better. Neither does Dan Bernstein.

But the narrative from Bernstein is THE SOX HAVE A JEWISH GM THAT"S REALLY SMART. THE JEWISH OWNER FINALLY MADE THE REALLY SMART MOVE. THE BLACK GUY IS NO LONGER IN CHARGE. So, of course, that's the narrative of the entire station.

That's true. Time was on their side. Could have waited it out to do better. Maybe you build it up.

Some would say Boston would have gone a different direction if the Sox declined. What direction? Second best starting pitcher in the trade market is also owned by the White Sox.

Usually when someone says "denied" to one of these nominations, they don't follow it up with agreeing with the OP.

But he competited his behind off. He was a gamer!
He won 74 games in 5 years. Had a 3.40 ERA last season.
Will have surgery this year.
He's DB. Desecrated "Los Blancos" Sunday uniforms.
Sad.

The only thought I had overnight to counter this is they felt they had to get rid of him. We have no idea but was Sale such an ass to have around they felt he would ruin the club house to even have him around in spring? I am also always suspicious of Boras. He tells Sale to be a jag to get to a team that will renegotiate a better extension.

I don't know if I like the deal or not b/c I have no idea who these 4 kids are. But, if they were going to trade Sale, the time was probably now for highest value.

however, nomination seconded.

All of that Sale is a bad guy stuff is something the fan has imagined. You've never heard anything like that from any of his teammates. Sure, blowing a fuse over LaRoche's kid and cutting up the uniforms is childish, but you're talking about guys who play a children's game for a living. Most professional athletes are grown-up children. Do you think Michael Jordan is an adult?

Anyway, I don't care if Sale is a complete asshole. My perfect rotation is five asshole Sales. Their teammates can deal with them and so can the batters they face.

Finally, Sale is not a Boras client.

That's probably true. You had a free agent market where Rich Hill was the best guy. But who knows how desperate Washington might be in July sitting in second place five games behind the Mets?

I think its a good trade. They got at worst a top 3 (maybe THE #1) prospect in all of baseball and a pitcher that throws 100+. Its been time for a rebuild with this team basically since Ozzie left. The Sox are finally doing that, and catching shit for it. I don't know about the rest of you fans, but I certainly did not want to sit thru another 75-81 win season where "all they need to do is win 10 out of 12 in August to get into the Wild Card mix" yet again. No, they did not HAVE to move Sale, but the time was probably right for both parties to get a fresh start.

Tear this down, rebuild it, and see where the Sox are in 4-6 years. I am not going to sit here and proclaim this trade as being great, nor am I going to celebrate losing a generational talent like Chris Sale, but I am going to applaud the Sox for finally picking a lane and trying to build a solid team from within.

i think it's more reflective of a bad market rather than a "bad trade". and i think now was the time to trade him. anything can happen during a season, and if JORR's scenario isn't right on...sale could go down with an injury or something. at least if you trade him now while healthy, you get back highly touted prospects and you roll the dice.

even if the move is bad, it's the right time for such a move. they need to rebuild, and this is a start.

Here's the thing though, they already had the kind of core that they are now hoping they can get. The whole benefit of having Sale, Quintana, Eaton, and Abreu all signed to bargain basement contracts is that it allows you the leeway to go out and pay for premium guys to surround them.

I've defended the Sox in the past when fans unfairly complained they were cheap. I didn't think bernstein was wrong in calling that a "pernicious myth". But with this core group there isn't any doubt that the Sox have gone cheap around them. They've never given them a chance and when they have stepped up a bit, it's been the wrong guy like LaRoche.

Look at it this way. If you look at the Cubs core going into last couple seasons, Bryant, Rizzo, Russell, and Arrieta is pretty strong. But if year after year you put guys like Austin Jackson in center, Brett Lawrie at second, Avi Garcia in right, etc. etc., the Cubs aren't winning a World Series. And it would be goddamn dumb to make the call to trade Bryant and Rizzo because Jackson and Alexei Ramirez couldn't give them enough help to win a championship.

And the premium guys they signed- Dunn, LaRoche, and to a lesser extent, Melky, have failed the Sox. So they are going to go about things a different way. Something they haven't done in 30+ years, if ever.

I applaud that. Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn't. Maybe in 5 years the AL is historically bad and the Sox win 100+ games. Time will tell.

The Sox are rebuilding in hopes that they get young cost controlled guys like Sale, Quintana and Eaton to build around like the Cubs did. They already had those fucking guys and high draft picks and still couldn't put anything but crap around them.

The bigger question is, why did they fail?

3, IMO is a trend. Kenny has to be saying something to those "power" hitters.

I can support a rebuild. I can not support the .500 season. Tear it down, and a nice side effect is a top 10 pick, which they seem to be getting right. In sports, it is either all or nothing, and both are almost wins if you know what you are doing. If you win it, you win. If you suck it up and rebuild with top 10 picks and hit on them, you win.

I think some of those have to be good young hitters, which the Sox do not have. You have named 3, which I would take the hitter out of that.

And maybe this is the start of a new way of thinking and doing things for the Sox.

Regardless, I can't imagine you being too broken up about this trade. You were waving the W around the Wrigley Bleachers 6 weeks ago, and when the Sox are back in the playoffs you will be cheering for them again.

I think Kenny is a total jackass and needs to be gone from the Sox yesterday, but IMO he was 100% correct with the whole Drake LaRoche thing. IIRC, Sale was the one who hung the jersey in his locker and wanted to not play the Spring Training game. The team was right to kick him in the ass for that nonsense.
