Dumb invention.

My truck is in the shop, so I've driven my wife's ride a couple times this week... And the key fob is fucking worthless and annoying. The problem is that it takes the routine of using keys out of the equation, making it possible to even drive a running car and get stranded without a key at your destination. I also just don't remember where it is because there's no habit of putting it in my pocket after taking the keys out.

But more than anything, are we really so lazy that we have to rely on radio signals rather than turning a key? Last night, my wife couldn't lock the fucking car because I was more than 5 feet away with the fob.

Fuck this shit.

Aren't they pretty expensive to replace when you lose them too? Wholeheartedly agree with the nomination and reasoning.

I'm pretty sure they're expensive and you have to have one programmed for your vehicle.

My family makes fun of me because I don't even have a key fob. Manual locks and windows.

That's because you're old.

My mother in law's car has this Key Fob thing. My father in law dropped his in the car somewhere, and now she can't lock the doors because it's inside.

I really hate them on rental cars. Usually they hand you 2 fobs linked together which makes them uncomfortably bulky and also a potential $400+ replacement if you happen to lose them. I'm guessing the number of fobs which are accidentally carried away in a customer's pocket after the return is quite high as well.

This is what I'm talking about. The potential for things like this to happen do not outweigh having to raise your arm to put a key in the ignition.

I'm all for keys. More keys and less electronics would make this world a safer place.

Make keys great again!!!!

Nomination denied.

It works perfectly if you keep it out of your butt, dude.

Agreed.

There is little real world benefit for them, other than for car dealerships picking up a tidy windfall from the millions of careless out here.

The new ones that you can unlock the door and start the car without pulling it out of your pocket are really nice though.

Remote starting is nice and serves a purpose.

Fuck this shit.

I have a Chrysler 200 for the weekend and hate this aspect. Just experienced the key fob proximity nonsense 10 minutes before I opened the thread.

Pretty terrible car overall.

You can do that with pretty much any newer GM car.

Warming up newer cars beyond about 1 minute is not good for the engine. Start it and drive reasonably until it warms up is recommended.

My grandfather was a very mechanically-inclined guy, the type who can fix anything. He never "warmed up" his cars. Even 45 years ago he said exactly what you said above- just drive reasonably and the car will warm up.

not really

a big reason the fobs are being pushed is because insurance companies. stolen cars are a big thing, and fobs nearly eliminate the problem because no matter how many wires you splice, the computer wont start without the right encrypted key sent to it's rom.
