That's a lot of the $100 toilet seats and $50 screwdrivers that our free spending higher ups in the military get. |

I'm reminded of a scene in the West Wing where one of the characters ask a newly appointed NSA assistant why a drinking glass needed to cost hundreds of dollars to make. The guy, clearly annoyed that he's answered questions like this time and time again, take a hammer and strikes the glass with it. It breaks cleanly into three pieces. He says the glass is so expensive because you can't have hundreds of pieces of glass flying around if a base gets hit by an airstrike or something to that affect. I'm don't really have a point here as I don't know if this is why stuff that we would consider mundane can be so expensive when the military buys it, but I'm never going to pass up a chance to reference The West Wing. |

I've found that in my industry, where everything is extra-expensive, that the current excuse is pedigree. The engineering department can tell you where the steel was milled and what the batch test results were for many critical parts, and, in some cases, every part is a critical part. Remember the o-rings that caused the Challenger disaster? That kind of pedigree takes people and resources to maintain, and they all need to be profitable. The result is high prices for every part. The real application of common sense gets clouded by the threat of responsibility in the worst case scenario. |

I don't work on anything government related personally, but occasionally we use parts that are cross referenced for both military and commercial use. Those specs on mil parts are even tighter than parts that can already be pretty tight depending on application. Wanting something to be that reliable isn't cheap. |

I hear mil spec when a Ford ad runs and I hear "the a.c. only works in winter". A large part of the MI Complex is built on retired service members with good ideas who sell them at an upmark to unretired friends. An example would be North American Rescue products. The Wal-Mart of trauma equipment. They buy up patents for good medical trauma equipment then crank out shitty lower spec mass produced models. |
