I am so sick of hearing media in Chicago, or anywhere I suppose, say that about a player who might go or goes to New York. Carmen just said it with regards to the possibility of Cutler signing with the Jets. Has a player ever not signed with a New York team because they were "afraid" of having to deal with the media there? Besides, after what happened with Kane, it's hard to imagine them being scummier or more unethical than the Chicago media. |

While the "New York Media" may get over-billed from time to time, they have earned a reputation as being welcoming of confrontation with sports stars, franchise owners, executives, etc., and don't shy away from open, sharp criticism of it all. The "Chicago Media" has, by my count, one guy like that working the beat: Joe Cowley. The rest are a collection of shills paid by the franchise (Zaidman), or more interested in a cozy relationship with management than researching and writing stories that might make waves, much less chop (Bruce Levine, Mark Gonzales, KC Johnson, Brad Biggs, etc.). Maybe this is some out-of-town-stupid, but I find it hard to believe that if a member of the beat corps in New York sat on a story of a team executive choking a head coach out of deference and "respect" (which earned him the nickname "scoop" if I remember correctly), he would be mocked and ridiculed out of the business, not become one of the longest-tenured beat writers in town with regular radio hits, and certainly wouldn't have other beat guys and columnists, from competing local media outlets, come to his defense when his water-carrying was outed on national television by a guy in a funny looking blazer. |

The other thing is it makes absolutely no sense to bring it up about Cutler. The chief characteristic anyone's ever associated with Cutler is not giving a shit about anything, be it the score, playing good football, leadership, etc. Yet the one thing he's suddenly going to actually care about is Mike Lupica writing something mean about him? |

Probably right. |
