For its Kafkaesque university inquiries. This identity politics shit infests everything.

"I'm from Canada and they think I'm slow, eh."

This type of shit should not be covered under anonymous reporting. If you are so fragile with your preferred pronouns then you shouldn't be in an academic setting.

They should doxx the complaining party.

Shepherd: Sorry, what did I violate in that policy.

Joel: Um, so, gender-based violence, transphobia, in that policy. Causing harm, um, to trans students by, uh, bringing their identity as invalid. Their pronouns as invalid — potentially invalid.

Shepherd: So I caused harm?

Joel: — which is, under the Ontario Human Rights Code a protected thing so something that Laurier holds as a value.

Shepherd: Ok, so by proxy me showing a YouTube video I’m transphobic and I caused harm and violence? So be it. I can’t do anything to control that.

Rambukkana: Ok, so that’s not something that you have an issue with? The fact that that happened? Are you sorry that it happened?

Shepherd: I know in my heart, and I expressed to the class, that I’m not transphobic and if any of them — again, I don’t know what they said — but I don’t think I gave away any kind of political position of mine. I remained very neutral, and uh—

Rambukkana: —that’s kind of the problem.

Presenting ideas causes people harm. This is the state of discourse in 2017.

A tv panel discussion is now the same as showing Hitler's speech before the 1936 Olympics or Triumph of the Will.

My politics aren't really in line with this guy's but he's certainly a serious academic who also happens to be a farmer and grew up far from wealthy:

I'm sure he's considered a Nazi these days.

The guy is very intelligent and definitely not a right wing quack. He was a member of the NDP before realizing they didn't love the poor but just hated the rich.

He was prescient in identifying how Marxists have moved from the proletariat and means of production to the "oppressed" vs the oppressors.

He is correct in identifying how the humanities in college have traded science for feelings. I agree with him that the state should stop subsidizing what is "socialism with a rainbow tint". Peterson also does not like the white identity movement.

If you listen to what he is saying you can see how we must physically remove the leftists from academia to save Western Civ, but that doesn't mean becoming white supremacists.

Yeah, he definitely did . . . I think his critics are now trying to say that what happened isn't really what happened.

I heard a podcast that had him and Jared Diamond discussing the Rise of Western Civilization. I like Jared Diamond and thought Guns, Germs, and Steel was very interesting. But Professor Hanson takes issue with several of Diamond's premises. It was a good academic discussion without anyone getting crazy or breathing fire. Two real intellectuals discussing ideas.

This type of thing is far more dangerous than anything that is happening from the extreme Right. It’s becoming mainstream.

Neither of them are taken very seriously by practicing historians at this point. But intellectual dishonesty seems to be a prerequisite for being a public intellectual these days, particularly those who enjoy engaging in grand narrative debates about 'Western Civilization" for instance.

So you prefer the Stasi like interrogations about misuse of pronouns? Peterson is an accomplished academic who believes that research should be evidence based not because you "feel" a certain way.

What type of left leaning person are you Zeph? The type that supports basic social support and protections for labor or some shit lib safe space preferred pronoun type?

When you live in a echo chamber, this is the end result. Its a part of our society now. You follow what you want on social media, you watch the channels on TV that align with your thinking and you never step out of your comfort zone.

It starts early too. My son is 7 and hates Donald Trump. I don't really disagree with him but I asked him why. He said "our teacher doesn't like him and neither do my friends". I tried to explain that's it wrong to go with the crowd without learning for yourself but he's still too young to get it and I'm not about to try to get him to think Trump is a good president.  I'll play devils advocate with him from time to time but I have to put my foot down somewhere.

We're trying to instill that lesson as well but as you said it's early and he doesn't understand.

Sadly, it is happening here too.

https://www.thecollegefix.com/post/39094/

College radio hosts were yanked off the air and threatened by school administrators for using the word tranny on the air.

I was referring to Hanson and Diamond there pal. But please, enlighten me on Peterson's major academic contributions to philosophy. You seem quite familiar about that realm given your summary of his groundbreaking work earlier in this thread.

Definitely the kind who goes hunting the internet every day to get shocked and appalled at political correctness running amok on college campuses and think that's far more worrying and important than anything going on in Washington.

I think its an important contribution to identify that those who trumpet being politically correct are in fact authoritarian bootlickers of the left wing variety.

What has Washington done that has directly lowered your quality of life in the last year, or hell three years?

Also that is a lazy whataboutism. There is a 200 page thread about Trump you can go and discuss Washington in. This thread is about the normalization of free speech repression on campuses.

Yep.

Again I say when the pendulum swings back to these folks 'on top', it's very likely it'll be worse than it is now.

Jordan Peterson is sort of a knob, but Canada can be so unnecessarily precious about this stuff. Remember when a university made someone stop offering a yoga class because she was culturally appropriating Indian culture? They made her call it "mindful stretching" or something.

The Canadian academic who was a panelist on the video shown.

He has been a critic of Canada's laws regarding pronouns and political correctness.
