Ravinia Brewing's Highland Park brewpub on hold after Ravinia Festival demands royalties

Post subject:  Re: Ravinia Festival

Quote:
Ravinia Festival has two trademarks for its name: one covering entertainment services and the other covering restaurant and catering services. The agreement would allow the brewing company to use the Ravinia name if, among other stipulations, it turned over some of its profits, Tolpin said.

That was unacceptable for the owners of Ravinia Brewing, who applied for a trademark on their company’s name in 2015, though it has not yet been granted. The groundbreaking for the brewpub, originally scheduled for Feb. 26, has been put on hold.
Stupid of the brewers to use the name Ravinia with the trademark being grated yet, especially in Highland Park of all places.

Yeah, this lawsuit seems pretty cut and dry. Why not just change the brewery name?

Post subject:  Re: Ravinia Festival

They may have a chance. If the festival never previously defended the name and there have been numerous other places using Ravinia, I think that gives them some grounds for free use.

Denied. Brewery's fault.

Get a new name.

Nothing says drinking beer like Ravinia. If you mass produced a high priced wine that should be sold for middle of the road prices based on its quality, that would properly reflect the name Ravinia.

It's a frivolous lawsuit. Of what importance to me or the general public is the name of a pub?

Yeah but I assume Ravinia sells beverages, so a plumbing company wouldn't be viewed as competing.

In addition to the park, there's also a big neighborhood of Highland Park that's just called "Ravinia," it has its own stop on the railroad, and I think may have been its own town at one point. As Seacrest pointed out, there appear to be plenty of Ravinia-named businesses on the North Shore. As long as they're not explicitly trying to draw a connection between the beer and the festival, there shouldn't be an issue, should there?

...no, the argument you used to say it is "fair" to view a discrimination lawsuit as "frivolous" applies just fine, here.

Ravinia tried to go it on its own after it was created as a small community in the second half of the 19th century. It was annexed by Highland Park in 1899. Ravinia Park, an early amusement park was created in 1904 later became Ravinia Festival.

There have been many businesses related to food service that have used the Ravinia name over the decades. None of them were ever harassed by the music venue, until now.

As long as the brew pub doesn't use the Ravinia Festival logo, I see now reason why they can't use the name. It's definitely overreach by the park imho.

No one was more shocked than me that Seacrest made a good point but his point does mean that it's fair to view this lawsuit as frivolous.

You are such an idiot.

Yes the CSO plays there along with MANY others. These acts played at Ravinia last year;
John Legend
Sammy Hagar
The Moody Blues
Michael McDonald
Boz Scaggs
Willie Nelson
The Temptations
Blondie
Garbage
Stephen Stills
Tony Bennet
Darius Rucker
Santana
John Mellencamp
John Butler Trio
Stevie Nicks
Smokey Robinson

This year's schedule has not fully been released yet, but Jethro Tull and Roger Daltrey have been announced.

You should try to get a little bit of knowledge of something before you dismiss it as gay or beneath you. As CH mentioned, it can be a very nice time and it's a great date spot.
