We caught him with warning signs! The NRA must be pleased.

Seems the guns were seized because he hadn't had a valid FOID.
Bricks ridiculous trolling notwithstanding, this is a valid seizure of weapons. He had them illegally.

I think the point isn't so much that they seized his guns or whether or not they were legal, but rather that the raid was driven by politics.

Do you think the NRA will think that was a valid action?

I'm actually glad you think this kid deserved this. I expect many gun owners to think that was unreasonable.

How did they know he had guns in the first place?

There has to be more to the search warrant than a t shirt.

Yeah, we can probably trust the government to do the right thing.

Seems reasonable.

Otherwise did we open the door for a search of a home of everyone wearing s pot leaf or che Guevara shirt?

Its tricky. I'm having a hard time believing that the batf was interested in someone due to a tshirt. He had illegal weapons. They should have been seized based on his lack of credentials. Now your trolling was about the NRA and you know that.

Oooooor liklier the much simpler explanation.

Police - Step 1: we received a tip about a guy who is a white supremacist and is really interested in guns. Let's take 30 minutes to do a quick background check given our fellow police officers in Parkland got shit on for ignoring "warning signs".

Police - Step 2: Let's check if he has a FOID card!
a. Yes, OK well we will move on. There is nothing illegal going on. Kid likes guns and hates balcks.
b. No, OK he is breaking the law. We are going to take his guns.

Onto the next case.

To the best of my knowledge, the two primary ways to solve the gun issue according to the NRA:
1) Add significantly more guns to the situation.
2) Have law enforcement catch bad people with guns prior to the act based on the clear warning signs that are almost always present after the fact.

That is what happened here. The NRA should be happy that a warning sign was treated with the level of concern that it deserves.

That isn't trolling.

...or you know, catching bad guys with guns because of "warning signs" is a pointless plan that won't solve anything because rightfully so people have rights to not be pre-judged for crimes and the NRA and other try and score cheap points by saying it after the fact knowing that we shouldn't get into a situation where simply the idea of a higher possibility of committing a crime forces you to lose Constitutional rights.

So, when the next shooting happens and we hear about "warning signs" let's remember this case and others.

You would like to think that this is the case, but given what we have read about police over the last few years, and what we have seen from a former cop who posts here, its almost hard to give the Vernon Hills PD the benefit of the doubt and assume this common sense check actually happened.

 "liking guns" and "wearing a t-shirt promoting a naughty group" are not reasonable foundations for a search warrant.

Yes, my thoughts would he the same if the shirt was promoting ISIS.

You need a FOID card to be "really interested in guns"? In none of the reporting posted here has it been said that the anonymous tip said the kid possessed firearms.
