For those who don't know, Harley Clarke is a mansion next to the Evanston Lighthouse. It used to house the Evanston Arts Center. I guess it's run down and needs a bunch of work. Colonel Pritzker had a deal to buy or lease the property for a buck or something, fix it up, and run it as a B&B. Of course, the Evanston hippies screamed bloody murder over that and put a stop to it. I have no problem with that. I don't really think that the wealthy should be able to glom public property at will. But here's the thing, the same people who screamed are now crying because the place may be demolished. There are MANY historic mansions in Evanston. I'm not sure this one is particularly special. I suppose it comes down to the fact that it is publicly owned and also that a lot of people have fond memories of themselves or their kids taking art classes there. But I don't know if it would be so terrible if it were torn down and the land became open park land/green space. Here's the real douchebagging though. If you go through Evanston, about every other yard will have a sign that says "SAVE HARLEY CLARKE". Some of the signs are in the yards of mansions bigger and more important than Harley Clarke itself. If all these assholes who want to save Harley Clarke so bad kicked in a few bucks each there wouldn't be any issue at all. But as is typically the case, the rich don't want to reach in their own pockets. They want a tax that can be shared by the working class. |

Speaking about mansions, did you see where Obama came out and lectured people about people having too much money and that the disparity of income was too great. HE said something to the effect about not needing such big houses. I guess he didn't consider his 8 bedroom, $8M mansion in an exclusive area of Chicago as being too much house?? |

Holy fuck, who fucking cares? You introduced yourself to this board as a Sox fan who looked forward to talking sports. Clearly you have veery little interest- if any- in talking sports. This thread had nothing, literally nothing to do with Obama. So why even bring him up? There are plenty of other places on the internet and even a designated section here for this kind of bullshit. |
