When I was a kid, I remember there were fires, but now it seems like there are fires all over place all the time... what is the deal with that? |

I’d have to go back and look but after some massive fires around the turn if the 20th century the usfs and BlM developed and promoted a policy of extinguishing fires with in 24 hours of discovery. This led to a build up of fuel. You can find old photos of areas and there is a lot more timber now than those early photos. Couple this with some biological factors such as areas of the north the lodge pole pine becoming the dominate tree. When the lodge pole hits a certain diameter it becomes succeptable to a pine boring beetle that kills it and you end up with a lot of standing, dry fuel. Sorry, memory is a bit fuzzy from the Rocky Mountain ecology classes I took. |

Your tree classification sets off something in my mind which I can't recall 100% but I believe some area of the US got a big shipment of trees from Austrailia and planted them... found out that they don't hold a lot of water in them and they actually increased the burn in the area they were trying to protect... I think this is an 80s story... I will try to find the source. |

They need to stop calling them wildfires..this isnt naturally occurring from drought and lightning. These fires are caused by arson or human ineptitude. |

I think that there are more people right now that get their rocks off(literally) by starting fires. We've got a major one right now raging that was set by some 33 year old asshole. A firefighter and bulldozer operator were killed thus far in that fire. |

When you were a kid you probably weren't watching a lot of news nor reading much of the paper. When you were a kid there wasn't the constant news cycle or instant availability of the news. Technological advances combined with a bit of recency bias probably explains your observation ... which I completely relate to, don't get me wrong. |
