I've been on the "Beth Mowins isn't very good" bandwagon for about a decade. Search function. She'd always get the bad game....Illinois...so I've heard her plenty. She isn't very good. But now I can't say that because I'm a sexist. I wish she was better at her job so I would no longer be a sexist. |

She just reminds you of the Illinois football "tradition ". And it hurts. |

Sports fans like us rip on male announcers all the time. Young old, black white, man woman. If they are bad at thier job or they say something funny, people are going to pick up on it. |

Parkins said on Monday the reasons men give for not liking Beth Mowins are dog whistles and they just don't want a woman doing that job. I think Mowins' voice is fine, she just sounds like a robot. I don't need a clown like Dick Vitale to be in hysterics for the duration of the game, but her delivery is completely flat and devoid of human emotion. Frank is right, male announcers get criticized more often than not, so deflecting any and all criticism as sexist is ridiculous. Edit: It's Doris Burke who I think sounds like a robot, not Mowins. |

You can complain all you want about women not getting a chance to announce a game. You really should not try to make them immune from criticism though. All football broadcasters get blasted. It is truly not that many that are beloved beyond criticism. |

The problem is that all female announcers get ripped as soon as they step out of being the 30 second sideline reporter role. It's ok to give valid criticism of any announcer but there does seem to be common themes and intense reactions right from the beginning. People went nuts about Jessica Mendoza too.

I always get them confused, but which one famously said Northwestern was gonna have a "Persa Party" after winning a game? It was either Beth Mowins or Pam Ward. edit...it was indeed Mowins... Quote: “It’s a Persa party in Champaign today!” http://awfulannouncing.com/2011-article ... eek-5.html |

Doris Burke gets more praise than most of her male counterparts. But she actually knows what she is talking about. Beth Mowins doesn't. It was very apparent that Mowins was reading from a script/sheet the entire time and it sounded very awkward. Female broadcasters are fine but I think intense criticism is predictable when they put someone in there that doesn't sound like a professional broadcaster and also doesn't know the sport being played. Dismissing any criticism of Mowins seems to be making the Dicaro-esque argument that prominent jobs should just be handed to ridiculously unqualified people based on their gender instead of merit. |

She seems to be the one announcer who is a female that people tolerate but she also isn't really in a prominent role. I seem to remember when the Finals roll around she gets sent to the sideline. I'm also not saying there should be more female announcers. It's that a lot of people don't like any female announcers and don't really provide any substance as to why they are bad. As for Mowins, my opinion is that she was solid but not spectacular for the ESPN2 Noon football game which has a low production value anyways. |

I don't mind her doing a SW Texas A&M vs SE Louisiana State Technical College or whatever, but keep her away from my NFL. |

If she weren't stuck in places like Champaign, Ames or Columbia doing college games from Thursday through Saturday and routinely did pro games I'd give her a harder time for blandly doing a pro game no one really looked forward to or gave a damn about outside their fans. She's just a professional game manager type imo. |

I think it's safe to assume there were millions of people who aren't Lions or Jets fans who were interested in that game. |

It happens to a lot of good announcers. When the ESPN NBA guys do a college game as part of that broadcaster switch gimmick they are pretty horrible at it.

Back in the day, my college roommates and I appreciated the work of Robin Roberts on ESPN...they always gave her the shit games and circa mid 90's....she was very good. During confidence pools, we'd always pick a "Robin Roberts" game of the week....it was usually Cardinals v. Seahawks or something similar. Women in sports fine....just be good at your job. |
