I vote for parents. Shut up and teach your kids to get to school. |

I don’t think I missed 8 days in 4 years of high school. |

It's senior year, why does the school even care? I guarantee I missed 1/2 the Mondays my senior year once football season ended. |

Parents. I missed one day of school my Senior year and my dad made me get up and drive my brother and the three other kids I took to school and then go back and pick them up. |

It does seem strange that a kid who moves into Chicago months before gains entry to an elite school most kids in the entire city of 2.5 million people would give there left arm to attend. |

Is it really that hard to only miss 8 days of school without an excuse a year? I mean, even if you take your kids out for a vacation during the year you would have 3 days left to still miss. |

It looks like it is one parent complaining and it merges well with another uncomfortable conversation being held in a different thread. What prep school student is skipping before they get college acceptances? |

I'd bump it to 10 or 12. We anticipate one of our kids to miss 4 days before the year starts, I think he missed 7 or 8 days last year. |

Honestly, I think there's something missing here...I'm sure the list of excused absences includes what counts for the underclassmen...this seems more like some douchebag parent whining about something than anything. |

Exactly. Of course it's a (((Greenberg))) who is the complainer. |

second semester of senior year was a breeze. There was no reason to miss. At that age the lesson is go to school or go to work. |

Couple of things. I noticed my kids had more "senior skip days" that what I imagined was normal in years past. The other thing out here is if you have over the limit of excused absences it is a misdemeanor for the parents. They must appear before the magistrate and no getting gout of it. Of course the school office can play games and you can't likely pull every Chicago truant's parents to court probably. It seems you should probably be able to make your kid not miss 8 days if you want. |

I have a very good idea the name of the person that implemented this policy. I doubt that it was Joyce Kenner. Schools are graded partially on their attendance and if they fall below 95% then it effects their ratings. This is another example where an overreliance on statistics can be detrimental. Whitney Young doesn't need for 95% of its kids to attend in order to be thought of as a good school. |

Whitney Young also has an academic center program. I'm fairly certain that the vast majority of students that have been afflicted with "senioritis" are students that graduated from this program. Kids that graduate out of this particular program can receive high school credits even while they are in 7th and 8th grade. As a result they often have attained the necessary requirements for graduation by the time they become Seniors. There really isn't an incentive for them to attend school and thus MANY simply attend whenever they feel like it. What she could and should do is simply allow them to graduate in Feb and march in June if they so desire. She makes the call as the principal. I'm sure she has refused to do that (probably for funding purposes). |

Each gets their own portion of the idiot award ... the parents for fairly obvious reasons, and the school for apparently doing a piss-poor job of implementing the new rules ... the rules seem to have a Goodell-like vagueness to allow for decisions on what constituted an excused vs unexcused absence to be made on a whim if one wanted to do that. |

I think they both are. I think such concentration on attendance is stupid but i also think that 8 days is really a lot. |

One thing I am thankful for is our school has held out over holding Prom the Friday before graduation. A lot of schools around us do this to keep the seniors in line. Problem is this makes athletes have to chose between prom and attending sectionals or state in track. It also leads to baseball and softball teams having a 10am playoff game the night after Prom. |
