So, Zion Benton went down to Brother Rice the first week of the high school playoffs (and got their asses handed to them). But, that's not the story. Apparently there were racist chants from the Brother Rice stands towards the Zion Benton players. The ZB coaches were appealing to the refs to do something about it. The ZB principal even talked to the BR Athletic Director about it. BR has done nothing as far as I know. The ZB principal reached out to the Oak Park-River Forest principal to let them know about it. I don't know of anything happened at the Oak Park game. Regardless, let's hope that Warren crushes them this weekend at BR.

Three days shy of 20 years earlier, Rice and Thornton had a different experience. On March 11, 1997, in another sectional semi, the Wildcats posted a 12-point win, but the result was secondary to a firestorm prompted by racially insensitive chants directed at the Thornton players by Rice's student cheering section, the Crusader Crazies.

Brother Rice issued a formal apology, going so far as to have a school official travel to Harvey to read a statement over Thornton's public address system; and Brother Rice's then-Principal Brother Daniel Casey apologized in a letter to then-Thornton Principal William O'Neal.

To be fair, I went to Marist (2 miles down the road) and there were racists there, as there are everywhere.

On the other hand, Brother Rice produced Tad Queasy....so not sure we can forgive them for that.

I get that, but this is a Catholic High School in which decorum is mandatory for fear of expulsion. They should not be held to a higher standard, but at the same time, they should be held to a higher standard. Do they do the same thing when playing Mount Carmel or St. Rita?

Students at a Georgia high school will be disciplined this week after spelling out a racial slur while performing with the school marching band.

Bo Ford, principal of Brookwood High School in Snellville near Atlanta, sent a letter to parents over the weekend apologizing for the incident, CBS 46 reported Monday.

Ford said that some of the brass instruments have covers that, when arranged properly, spell out the school’s mascot, “Broncos.”

The covers are not normally worn on the instruments while the musicians are on the field.

A group of students, however, rearranged the letters to spell out a four-letter racial slur during a half-time performance at a Friday football game.

Ford condemned the use of the "hurtful, disrespectful and disappointing” term.

“We are a very inclusive community and we care about all of our students,” Ford wrote. “We are concerned that this situation occurred and are committed to taking steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

“In addition to reviewing our halftime procedures, we will also be taking disciplinary actions with the students involved,” he continued.

The band director was not on the field when the performance started because it was also the "Senior Night" event, Ford wrote.

Gwinnett County Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that she doesn’t anticipate any action against the staff.

They used to chant, "Antoine can't read" when they played MC in early 90s.

Because there isn't the same feeling of safety in numbers for them at baseball games. About 7-8 years ago we had a little guy who probably didn't know better walk into a travel dugout and confidently state "Blacks don't play baseball". I guess he realized he wasn't supposed to repeat what he'd heard at home when he saw the reaction of our kids.
