Dude stepped in it yesterday on Twitter (go figure!). “If the players all retired tomorrow, we would replace them, the game would go on; in three years it would make no difference whatsoever . . . The players are NOT the game, any more than the beer vendors are.” He went on to make more stupid comments.

The Red Sox issued the following statement.

I enjoy his work on Twitter. It's entertaining. Not sure how he was ever a respected baseball mind but I don't know shit about baseball so maybe he didn't use to be crazy

Isn't what he said about the players true?

He's wrong about the beer vendors though. Just try to grab a cold one at Sox Park when the Cubs are home at the same time.

Does he mean they would just replace the current MLB players with AAA players and current MLB-bound prospects or guys off the street?

Probably not. If a meteor killed every MLB player right now and the league had to start over from scratch, it would likely not be in a great spot three years from now.

What he said is mostly true. The players could technically form their own league or all get hired by Amazon for the Amazon Baseball League and MLB would suffer.

If the players were replaced and all had to go sell insurance then MLB would be fine with the replacements.

I don't agree with James comments but I think the Red Sox are the bigger DB here for publicly calling them inappropriate and absurd.

What I got out of it was Bill James thinks really highly of himself. Probably warranted.

People watch College Football and MLS, which are leagues comprised of lesser talented players compared to other ways to consume the same sport. Any league could replace their entire player base with another player base and if that league remains the main way to consume a sport...it will be fine.

A strike nearly killed the sport but if all the players died the sport would be fine. Sounds reasonable

Three years would be a little short. 5-7 years? Sure.

He's right in his overall point.

Baseball would survive.

I agree, but the players are more important than the beer and cotton candy vendors.

The league would survive probably. "in three years it would make no difference whatsoever " is a pretty bad take.

If the White Sox started with a completely fresh roster would they be better in three years? :(

Fans side with ownership now. Also, the problem with the strike was that there was no World Series(White Sox won it).

Yup. They don't need to get better, everyone else just needs to get worse. Meteor solves that.

Screwing over players on service time worked out for both sides. The Sox keep a top prospect for an extra year and the top prospect is not killed by a meteor.

Yeah it’s a shame those poor defenseless players agreed to collectively bargain being screwed over on their service time

They weren't members of the union when that was collectively bargained.

But, it was a joke anyways.

Probably not. If a meteor killed every MLB player right now and the league had to start over from scratch, it would likely not be in a great spot three years from now.

People pretty much root for laundry. The NBA perhaps an exception to a certin degree.

Of course, but I think you and others are underestimating the degree to which the quality of the sport would suffer if you just took the best 750 or so players in the world out of the game. I'm fairly confident it would not be the same league with the same rating and popularity three years later. 20-30 years maybe.

Yeah the 3 year thing was goofy. I don't think it'd take 20 years. Maybe 7-10.

Quote:
People will come, Ray.
They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom.
They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it.
They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past.
"Of course, we won't mind if you look around", you'll say, "It's only $20 per person".
They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack.
And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon.
They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes.
And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters.
The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces.
People will come Ray.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball.
America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers.
It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again.
But baseball has marked the time.
This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray.
It reminds us of all that once was good and that could be again.
Oh...people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

I think you wouldn't even notice in 3 years.

I'll tell you what I do notice. When Bob Shaw and Stacey Eaton are working a Pearl Jam show at Wrigley and I have to buy warm beer from some slowpoke vendor.
