I dunno.
Some 55 year old nutjob here in town went out into his front yard in broad daylight last week during dinnertime
and ate his gun for supper. One of his kids started a GFM with a $10,000 goal "to put my father to rest".
It's been a week, and it's raised $565.00. No, not 5650.00.......9 donors, $565.00 total so far.
Obit said he worked at and retired from Harley Davidson, and was also a 'yard manager' for some lumber company for "20 years".
That's a pretty impressive resume for a 55 year old.
His mother, his ex-wife who 'remained a loyal and loving friend' after they divorced, his 5 siblings are all still alive.
It's been 10 years since one of my family members died, but I don't recall her cremation and service costing anywhere close to 10K.

This guy (and his son, for that matter) have had numerous run-ins with the KPD and are quite familiar with the court system here.
My wife actually works with a lady who lived across the street from him, and apparently he was well known on the block for being a whack. Secret compartments in the house with a doomsday stash of guns I don't believe he was allowed to possess, various stories about neighbors having things go missing from their yards, etc. At what point do we just say, "No. Figure it out. People obviously had to figure out a way to pay for funerals before the GoFundMe culture erupted, you're gonna have to just deal with it."
I mean, it's not like I hope the son doesn't get help, it's just so automatic these days....
Whatever. Maybe I'd feel differently if it was me and my family, I don't know............

I want to thank everyone who contributed to helping me and my family during this extremely difficult time. This will be the last time I post this. I will be taking down the GoFundMe campaign next week. We still need help though. We have only came up with half of the funeral expenses so if you can help we need you more then ever right now. What's the other fucking $9K for then?
If you need $1500 for a cremation, a box, some memorial cards and a 2 hour service, say that, and put in the obit that remembrance gifts (not flowers) would be appreciated.
Funeral homes will often work payment plans and some may even bill you later.
This just looks like an obvious cash grab because they often work.
Oh yeah, the gofundme is being pulled 'next week', but the funeral was August 22nd.
I guess they only paid for the blown off head portion of the decedent to be cremated....

Well, the cynic in me is waiting for the other show to drop.
What if this person actually came close to hitting the 10K and his father's neighbors caught wind of it.
The potential lawsuits...."This kid is profiteering off his dad's suicide while I have to rack up therapy bills for my kids
who now have PTSD because they were playing in the front yard at 5:30 on a sunny Tuesday afternoon when this guy walked outside and shot his face off in front of the whole neighborhood."
It's obviously a terrible story, and unlike death after a long illness, these expenses were entirely unexpected, but come on.
Don't internet beg for $10K when the services you're claiming it's needed for do not come to that amount.
If this guy was as beloved as his obit makes it look, why is a gofundme necessary in the first place?
You may ask me why I care? I don't know. Probably the same reason I care about the shithead who shot up the videogame contest.
I don't have a gun and I don't play videogames anymore, but:
It's bad for the videogame companies/responsible game players and it's bad for the gun companies/responsible gun users.
These types of fundraisers are bad for the people who actually have no choice but to ask strangers for help.
