Wins $1.2m in a tournament; gives his caddy $5k. (Caddies typically get 10% when their guy wins.)

Why didn't the caddie take the $15,000? Seems strange. Was he trying to shame Kuchar? If so, it obviously didn't work.

Kuchar is a huge Sinclair investor .

Sure, he had an arrangement to give the caddie a bonus. When he won the tournament that goes out the window. He said the caddie turned down an additional $15k. It should have been an additional $100k+.

Dick move by Kuchar.

Yeah, that didn’t make sense unless like you said, he was hoping Kuchar would be shamed into eventually giving the 10%.

Is this guy a professional PGA caddy or just some local at the club? It sounds like he just grabs a caddy each week. If he is up front with the payment what did he do wrong.

10% makes sense for a personal caddie that is traveling week to week with the player and has attached his life to the golfer.

The guy made 160 million in his baseball days, he doesnt need money. I dont know why he's caddying.

Caddy is the DB. He agreed to deal. Kuchar paid more than original deal and even offered the 15k on top. Not a bad weekend for a club caddy

When I caddied at Midlothian, typically a tournament win would multiply the usual rate significantly. Instead of $100 for 2 days, you'd get like $1000, sometimes more if it was a guy really enjoying his moment.

He should have given the guy 10% or something close to it.

With that said, 15k is nothing to sneeze at and I cant believe he turned it down.

Yea, it's not a bad weekend, but there is a protocol/etiquette to these things and most guys would have given the caddy way more.

Kuchar is definitely cheap.

I found something else in the story and Kuchar says the 15k was not offered by him. It sounds like he was annoyed the agency offered that to make this go away. He stands by there their original deal.

I'm leaning towards this - a sub caddy for a week is usually paid less; even so, it would have been a much better PR move and a cool story to give him a standard win cut.

This particular guy is a club caddy who filled in as Kuchar's regular caddy (I think) was having some health issues and couldn't travel to Mexico.

The 10% thing are handshake deals. Sometimes they get more, sometimes less. If the player misses the cut, the caddy gets nothing (and likes it!).

Kuchar probably should have given a better %, but still $15K for club caddy who was on the bag for 5-6 days and didn't have to travel at all is nothing to turn your nose at. And with the caddy going public like this, you can bet that no PGA player is ever going to use him again at the Mayakoba Classic or anywhere else in Mexico.

When I was at Evanston, it really depended on the player. Everybody knew who the cheap fuckers were and nobody wanted that loop. But if you were in Caddiemaster Jack Turner's doghouse, that was all you would get. It was things like the club championship where you got to make a little money but having a guy who was a good tipper and a good player who liked you. Usually it was guys who showed up and went out twice everyday who ended up with those players. I never worked that hard.

My brother taught me to subvert the system for tournaments. Any time Id get a good tipper who liked me, Id ask them if they had a caddie lined up for the 3man/2-day and offer to be their guy.

One of my friend's older brothers- he's much older than we are so I didn't really know him- was a top caddie at Evanston and there was some Chick Evans deal where top local caddies got to work the Western Open. At Olympia Fields in, I think 1968, Howie drew Nicklaus's bag. Nicklaus ended up winning. I don't remember the amount Howie got from him but it was a lot for a teenager in 1968. I remember they had a photo from Sports Illustrated framed in their kitchen of Jack walking onto the green and Howie pulling the pin.

Yeah, that was the best way. To get a guy who liked you and would ask for you. Jack Turner may have hated your guts, but he couldn't say no to a member.

In his own interview with Bamberger, Kuchar said the deal before the week was $1,000 for a missed cut, $2,000 for a made cut, $3,000 for a top-20, and $4,000 for a top 10. The $1,000 was “extra” for a good week and brought the total to $5k.

Not sure what I’d be expecting from someone who seems pretty cheap from the beginning. But I’m guessing Kuchar would have happily moved to the next caddie on the list if this wasn’t worth the effort.

Post subject:  Re: No tippin’ Pippen: Matt Kuchar

I thought that Kuchar was being pretty cheap as well but that they had originally agreed on $3000 for the week and he paid him out $5000. I think
he probably should have kicked him over at least $10K for the efforts. That is like winning a small lottery in Mexico. A deal is a deal and Kuchar is
sticking with it and said he is not losing any sleep over it.

Sometimes I miss my caddying days and part of me would like to go back to it if I can retire early enough to still carry a bag a few times a week. I used
to have a really good loop with a younger guy who was a good player, we worked well together and while I didn't know how much they were betting, I know
my guy was winning more than he was losing the summer I was caddying for him. All of the sudden he stopped asking for me by the end of the season.
Apparently the caddy master had told him that I was a better player than he was and he didn't like that.

The reports are that he did offer him another $15K, and the caddy turned it down.

Thats silly. If I was winning and playing well (by my standards), I wouldn't care if the guy on my bag was a 30 handicap or a scratch golfer. I guess thats just rich, white people problems though.

There has to be more to this story. Word of big money could be, you know, problematic in Mexico.

I don't think I would care if a caddie was better than me. They almost always would be. The issue for some is having that in the back of your mind that they are judging and second guessing every one of your swings is not good.

I think that Kuchar was just fucking DUMB to not graciously given the guy a legitimate bonus. Kuchar was a pretty popular guy with the fans for whatever reason and he now will be viewed differently by a lot of fans. Pros do not need bad publicity particularly by the fact that he is a lily white as a guy can be and the caddie is Hispanic. A lot of these pros make major bank in endorsements and it is likely that he will get hurt financially by what he didn't do.

This doesn't help

Quote:
Ortiz is a club caddie in Mexico, and was picked by Kuchar to serve as a replacement when his regular caddie was unable to make the trip. After stewing over his paltry payment for a couple of months, Ortiz sent an email to Kuchar’s agent in January asking to be paid $50,000. He was instead offered an additional payment of $15,000, which prompted Ortiz to tell Golf.com that Kuchar and his agency could “keep their money.”

Quote:
Kuchar said he did not really understand why the pay dispute has turned into such an emotional issue. Told that a $5,000 caddie payment on a $1.3 million payday seemed frugal, he nodded, but indicated he had a different view.

“For a guy who makes $200 a day, a $5,000 week is a really big week,” he said.

Its not a coincidence that this guy is named after a cooch.

I hope this follows him around for the rest of his playing days.

You do it for common courtesy, but you mostly do it to appease the Golf Gods.
