For proposing segregation at the college level. What an absolute backwards thinking idiot.

It’s Time for Black Athletes to Leave White Colleges

They attract money and attention to the predominantly white universities that showcase them, while HBCUs struggle. What would happen if they collectively decided to go to black schools?

someone needs to tell her they go where the money is (in terms of full athletic scholarships and, in some cases, under the table handouts)

the same 4 teams would still win the National Championship regardless if Jackson State or Grambling went 12-0 every year.

college fans cheer for the school

take those same players, pay them in a minor football league and the ratings would be a fraction of what they are when affiliated with a college

Auburn fans cheer for Auburn and they don't cheer for Alabama

Segregation But Woke

I mean, isn't the current issue with HBCUs that you have Howard, Fisk, and Grambling thriving while the rest struggle? Wouldn't this just create another rich-get-richer problem in college sports, only more specific?

Ultimately, and perhaps inevitably, Thibodeaux announced that he was going to one of the top football programs in the country, the University of Oregon. “Nobody wants to eat McDonald’s when you can get filet mignon” is how Thibodeaux put it. But over the course of the five months between his visit to FAMU and his decision to enroll at Oregon, Thibodeaux—who gushed about the historically black university on social media—galvanized alumni and boosted national awareness of the institution.

Yeah, things were really looking up until he compared the black school to eating McDonald's. Still, though, uh, where'd the lighter fluid come from

Does the exploitation inherent in college football become Actually Good if the players are being exploited by professional-class blacks instead of whites?

He "boosted national awareness" on social media though.

Could you imagine pitching this story to the magazine? Remember when black people were banned from attending top universities? We should go back to that system.

What would happen if collectively black journalists stopped writing for The Atlantic and moved to historically black journalism like Jet or Ebony?

Fifty years ago that question was answered. For television.

And she's right. In basketball, it would be properly earth shattering. And welcomed.

There is a lot of truth to what she is suggesting and she isn't talking segregation. She is primarily concerned with elite athletes and their reluctance to attend HBCUs. She isn't proposing that blacks avoid white universities entirely. She wants the top athletes to attend HBCUS.

One thing she's missing is that places like Howard or your alma mater aren't going to let in the knuckleheads that play for Alabama and LSU. Maybe Morehouse could be like Northwestern.

Everyone lets in kuckleheads, if it benefits the old alma mater. Nothing changes that, except to the extent which the billions of dollars of tv revenue get shifted.

Billions.

And frankly, if the revenue loss crushes the administration and coaching salaries at Northwestern, Illinois, Duke or Kentucky, fine by me.

She isn't advocating that every black college athlete attend HBCUs. She is advocating for the better ones to select HBCUs.

Not sure anyone will be able to pass up the limelight and perks that come with major athletic programs though.

It's why it could never happen in football. Basketball is another story. All you'd need is 3-4 kids who could jump in a year. And would be on tv all the time.

You think?

With the segmentation and conference TV deals in place not sure it'd be that easy.

You're right that it would only take a few to band together to make it happen.

At some point, most casual fans care more about the uniform than the players. If it was strictly about the players, Ice Cube would be organizing U21 and U27 versions of the Big3 and attracting the best college basketball players to show off for pay around the country. Ex-NBA player David West is trying to do something similar with more second-tier players, but we'll see if it really gets off the ground next summer: https://www.hbleague.com/

I couldn't even tell you the names of two players on UIUC teams. Football or basketball. But I will still put today's football game on my phone at 3:30 until it becomes a blowout either way. It's simply a way to reminise about the PYT I was dating when I was there and how much she liked going to football games (Although we did have a referee keel over of a heart attack mid-game, which was awkward especially since the student section cheered thinking he had just slipped as opposed to dying standing up). Plus I can make fun of Lovie Smith should they lose to that Connecticut juggernaut.

So yeah, if the top 15 college basketball recruits all got together and decided that their one-and-dones should be for teams in the MEAC, sure go for it. But they still aren't making any money beyond what they'd be making under the table anyway.

Your true colors shining through- bitter and hateful. Sorry you are too immature to understand previous conversations about the context of words so you have to carry on with behavior like this.

Hill's entire column is an embarrassment to the Civil Rights Movement. Mainstream colleges are not "white" schools. They are open to everyone. Illinois has a black president who is handsomely paid. If she so concerned with previous policy at universities then quit the Atlantic and go write for The Root. She's a hypocrite, an idiot, and she's shaming black student athletes for social media attention.
