This weekend my oldest daughter got married. We had a great time celebrating this event with the exception of having my idiot sisternlaw and brothernlaw in town. They have a 10 yr old son who is autistic. They have done nothing for him. They just in the last couple years have been able to actually admit that he is autistic. This kid is completely out of control. And I feel terrible for him because it is not his fault. They baby him constantly and will never give him any consequences for his actions. He gets into everything...he never stops from the moment he is up till he crashes at night. Thankfully they did not bring him into the actual wedding ceremony, but he was into everything at the reception...yelling, screaming, running. They were supposed to drive home today, but they decided to stay an extra day and they have been at our house all afternoon. He is obsessed with ketchup...we had to remove the ketchup from our house because he kept grabbing it and running around the house with it trying to squirt it on everything. And I do not know who the bigger idiot is...the father who sits on his ass and acts like nothing his going on...or the mother who chases after him all day and babies him. He is getting to the point that they are not going to be able to handle him. He is a big kid and very strong. He punches, bites, kicks, scratches the parents whenever they try to do anything with him. It is pretty sad to see this kid. If they had just got him some help when he was younger things would not be this bad.

Maybe they'll get hit by a bus on the way home and finally be granted relief.

Congrats to your daughter.

Spike the kid's drink with Benadryl; problem solved.

Thanks. I am proud of her...she married a guy that we like...he has a good job, hard worker and comes from a good family. They paid for most of the wedding themselves. We helped out a long the way, but they did the majority of it...so that made things even better.

Working with the population in question (not the in-laws) one of the things that bothers me the most is seeing kids who’d be doing much better if the parents or guardians did anything for them. Sometimes it’s because they don’t have the resources or the network to get them help, and sometimes they’re just straight up chowderheads.

Completely agree. It is terrible. These 2 are just flat out idiots. They have the resources. They have season passes to Disney world, universal studios, busch gardens, and seaworld. They constantly go to these parks and say the rides are good therapy for him, yet they have chosen to do nothing to actually provide him any help. They ''homeschool" him but that basically means they do nothing. Another family member that lives close to them in Florida set up several visits and appointments with people that could provide him some help. Yet they always backed out...at first they did so because they could not bring themselves to admit that he had a problem, then they convinced themselves that they could help him at home. Yet that is not happening. It really is like a form of child abuse.

Posting about how much the kid bothers you on this site isn't going to help. Again we've been through this with IMU.

That is just odd parental behavior.

Bob....again, the parents are the problem not the child. His post clearly states that.

We host the family reunion here every other year, my Dad's mom's side, she was one of 14 kids, so it used to be a HUGE thing, still averages 75 people for a Sunday afternoon. One cousin and her husband have an autistic child, five or six year-old girl. They work so hard with her, and according to the dad she sleeps like 20 minutes twice a day, that's it. It is 23.5 hours of full-on attention, and coming here, we have a pool, the cows, a pond, fences, tractors, just a TON of stimulation and hazards for her, I really give them credit for coming. It makes me realized how blessed we were with easy kids. And, I'm thankful for this little girl that she has such devoted parents. It really shows how tired they are, though.

Someone with your anger issues certainly isn't going to be a good match with a child with special needs.

There really are so many doing great things in tough situations. Tough situations, but with a little help and hard work things can be so much better.

Like to hear Mac's thought on this.

I love to read and hear of Macs son...such a special relationship. Mac and his son are a great example of how things can work in a tough situation. And I know there are many others doing just the same things.

Correct me if I'm wrong...doesn't he have two sons who are autistic? I knew about Patrick, but I thought I heard him this week say another son has it.

Yes, and I need to fight the urge to DB the parents if I don't know the whole situation- like you do in this scenario. Half the time it's a single parent left to do all the work with limited resources.

A co-worker of my wife's had a son the same age as our middle child- severe epilepsy. wheel chair, hockey helmet, the whole bag. They were told up front 12-13 years expected life, he lived to 21, and got worse with every seizure. They did all they could on a very limited income with several other kids, and loved him to the end.

Mac has only one autistic son, Patrick. One of his others is just a chowderhead  Anyway sorry to hear this RFDC but you simply can’t worry or control how these things go.
