A six-month jail sentence for Stanford swimmer Brock Turner, who was convicted of sexual assault, has caused public outrage. His father's letter asking the court for leniency has only fanned the flames.

"His life will never be the one that he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve," Dan A. Turner wrote in the letter asking for probation. "That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life."

"20 minutes of action"??? Don't be trying to bang an unconscious person.

Didn't somebody read this letter before he sent it in? Anyone with an ounce of common sense would look at that phrase and tell him to change it.

Wasn't this line from a letter to the judge for consideration during sentencing? It's uncouth, to be sure, but I guess I have a harder time decrying someone for saying anything and everything when their son or daughter is staring down the barrel of a very serious felony at a young age, regardless of their unquestionable culpability.

I figured this thread would be several pages by now.

But I guess there is nothing to argue.

Come on.

There is no way he should have said that even in desperation.

Maybe the part about his kid not eating as many ribeyes as he used to could have been edited out

Stanford...figures.

What got me was the kid's dad thinking he doesn't belong on a sex offender registry.

Rich white guy rape culture.

Daddy probably lead the Pac 12 in roofie conquests back in his day.

Really? In the 11th hour with a kid staring down the better part of a decade in a penitentiary, we're passing judgement on what parents say in a plea for clemency? Ok, I guess. I choose not to, or at least, not nearly with the gusto of many.

No, as many have pointed out, there's no way you ever refer to rape as "20 minutes of action."

That's pretty heavy-handed considering it's not your offspring with their head in the hangman's noose, so to speak. I agree that sans-context, the father's comments are deplorable in their reductionism of such a heinous act.

Pretty much this. I see the angle of trying to save the kid's life but never in those words or even close to it. I would think a letter like that should be dripping with remorse and regret not indifference at best.

Regarding the offender list I sort of agree with the dad. I think there should be some degrees to the listing. I am not sure how but the kiddie predator, violent rapist and date rape/statutory things are different and should be listed in some way showing that.

Yes. We most certainly are.

Parents can still be wrong if they are defending their child.

Then have fun. I certainly hope none of you ever has to appeal for leniency on their child, and I furthermore hope that nobody pays particular attention to whatever it is you say in such an emotional plea.

If I do, I will not do it in a grossly offensive way like that.

Lots of parents do terrible things in the name of their kids. We can and should get mad at them.

Being "emotional" is not an excuse.

It may be an excuse, but so what? That doesn't mean he's less of a douchebag. And someone should have had enough sense to tell him not to put it the way he did. The kid did have a lawyer, right?

Oh come the hell on. "20 minutes of action" are words on a goddamn piece of paper submitted to a judge, he didn't even read out the plea in court, so it's not like he pointed to her in court and said "this slut was basically asking for it!". The phrasing is uncouth, yes even in context, but Jesus Christ, nobody was fucking stabbed by "20 minutes of action".

Yeah... like that shit that Patrick Kanes accusers mom pulled. That totally tanked her case.
And this dad kinda fucked over junior with his poor phrasing and other nitwittery.
