This has bugged me for decades and I just heard it again. And then I'm done for the night.

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is

The guy just asked you what time it was. He's probably trying to get to a train. I don't think he wants to stop and chat and have a philosophical discussion about the nature of time.

Just tell him it's 10 after 4 and move on. Get over yourself.

And he did it twice...possibly three times!!

Yes. Someone does know what time it is.

I find it more disconcerting that a hot rich chick stops to talk to him and he blows it by questioning why she cares.

In those situations, what she likes is now what you like, at least for a coupla years.

I mean, the guy admits he was wearing a watch at the very beginning of the song.

He clearly does care.

He’s just being an asshole.

Maybe he's one of those, "Yes, I wear a watch, but I can truly appreciate time, whereas you idiots can't."

I thought the correct time was 25 or 6 to 4:00.

Edit: Will leave this post to remind myself to pay better attention.

I just heard this song again and I have additional issues.

Why do you assume people are immediately crying? The guy just needs to know what time it is. He's not interested in wallowing in your weird sorrow. He's got to get to that train. Get out of your own head!!

Just tell him what time it is. We'd accept within 1 or 2 minutes.

Greatest band with songs about time. I'll give them that. Seem like weird dudes, though.

I never knew what was so remarkable about a man who danced with his wife until I was married with kids for over a decade

The song became appropriate a few years ago when they had that horrible “Chi-Town Rising” New Year’s Eve downtown. Chicago was playing that song at midnight, but the timing was messed up on the Rising Star, so it didn’t apex at midnight as planned.

So, they didn’t really know what time it was—prescient.

Of all the songs to nit-pick and over-analyze the lyrics....this one is not worthwhile.

Can we just focus on the fact that the horns are awesome and make the song memorable?

I mean they had to be coked out of their minds when they produced this, right?

With that guy whispering nonsense in your ear through most of the song. It's creepy.

Yes. Now, let's consider this next verse in the song. The pretty lady just mentioned that her diamond watch was broken.

But, she didn't ask him what time it was. But, this guy just can't give it up. It's all he talks about.

He cares more about time than any crazy bastard I've ever met.

"Introduction" is a really good song. The entire "hey everybody, we're a band, and we're here to say..." song premise is a terrible one, but those horns and that guitar solo, good stuff.

I still have fond memories of listening to the whole Buckhannon suite from Chicago II on Downes's show one morning when I was TAing for band and had nothing left to do the last two weeks of the year. "Colour My World" was kind of a sign of schmaltz to come but I like the rest of it a lot. Also, I was able to put together that the paint store "Fancy Colors" in Rolling Meadows where my parents always bought paint was a Chicago reference. Cute.

Saxon! I remember that place too! I think it was in Southpoint. It's gone now, of course, because it was in Southpoint, a cursed strip mall.

So, let's take a look at that final verse.

They are pushing and shoving you because they do know what time it is.

You even said they were trying to beat the clock so you clearly know what time it is also.

Don't be so artsy.

You know, back in the day the music video could really be an art form. They were interesting mini stories (sometimes) and I understand why all us goofs watched them.

Alright, so now let's deal with that next verse.

Just kidding. I don't think there is one.

Thanks for indulging me.

I'm done now. But, what is now? Does anyone really know?

Probably done. But don't bet on it.

No thinking this year. The 4th of July is on a Saturday this year.
