i get that the prevailing logic is that they were just looking for an excuse to get rid of him as a cost savings measure, the tweet was that excuse. But if that's the case why didn't they just get rid of him a long time ago ? Strictly public perception ?

No clue, honestly. Because you're right: If McNeil is replaceable now because of his salary and proximity to retirement, he was certainly replaceable when you gave him new paper as this pandemic wore on. Maybe they gave him his sunset deal as a thank you for coming in and saving the station's bacon after Bernstein & Goff tried to light it all on fire or something like that.
