I received 9 pieces of mail today and they all immediately went into the garbage can in my garage on my way in the house. This happens almost every time I get the mail. Maybe 5% of what comes in the mail do I even bother opening. What a complete waste of resources.

ive spent money to get off mass mailing lists. doesnt do shit. the only real way is to call the return address on each and every spam you get, and tell them to remove your address. total pain in the ass.

I get a piece of mail 5 times a week from the same mortgage broker trying to get me to refinance. For the last two years.

I had my mail held for two weeks when I went on vacation. Other than two issues of the local county weekly newspaper and a flier from Costco, not one item made it into the house; most of of it went into the "mindlessly shred while watching sports and then recycle" box in my garage. And four pieces of mail were for my neighbors.

Ditto. The Costco flyer makes it in to the house. My wife's aunt sends birthday cards and we do still receive some Christmas cards. Other than these I am hard pressed to think of any mail that does not go immediately to the recycling bin.

Wait until you have a kid that's getting close to college age. It's ridiculous how much they must spend on marketing. They're from everywhere. How many kids go: "That's a nice brochure. I think I'm going to Milliken!"

My daughter is getting a lot of that stuff right now. It is kind of fun. Some of the schools put a lot into their recruiting mail. Some of it has definitely caught her eye and she keeps them. She gets a shit-ton of stuff from Mizzou for some reason. They have some high-end printing they send out and she got on their list for some reason.

The cost of marketing is crazy. Then think about cutting down trees to harvest the wood for paper, hauling the lumber to the processing plant, hauling the paper to a printer, the cost of printing, etc. I guess getting rid of junk mail would put a lot of people out of work now that I think about it.

Remember when you were a kid and you got so excited about getting something in the mail? Now it's just a daily annoyance.

It’s so dumb and they get discounted bulk rates to send it. While grandma has to drop 50 cents or whatever to send a card.

There are two towns right on top of each other up here in Adams County akin to Urbana Champaign but with about 800 people each. They each have a post office about four blocks apart. I was not getting regular mail service and missed a package that the shipper said was held at the local post office.

So I go to the one in my town. They tell me they no longer deliver mail out of this office. I am like, why are you still open then? I go to the other one, and they have my package. I ask why I am not getting mail, and the clerk yells back to the stock room where the carrier is. The guy claims I do not have mail box. I said I do. They ask where. I said right on the street like every other house in my development. It took me two more trips to this post office and taking pictures to prove there was a mail box out front. I get my mail now. All ads.

we installed a giant mailbox that is effectively a trashcan. then we subscribe to USPS's informed delivery service where I get an email every morning with a picture of most pieces of mail.

needless to say i only get the mail once or twice a week. if we get a package, the mail guy (contract worker) drives up the driveway and drops it off at the door.

I used to have a HUGE customer that would print political mailers during the big elections. It was crazy how much money that was spent to ship this stuff and I know most people grabbed from their mailbox and go straight to recycling or the garbage with it.

The remaining killer app of the mail service is fixing elections.

i tried battling back a little in my apt building - ads and random envelopes filled with ads, etc. I'd put them on top of the building mailbox to either be taken away by the cleaning crew or whoever. You better believe the mailman put that shit right back in my mailbox and one time even wrote a scribble telling me to throw it away if i didnt want it. that made me chuckle a bit.

bringing it to me unprompted and im the asshole for passive aggressively saying take it back.

It doesn't stop with Mizzou. My son graduated over two years ago and if I didn't throw away the stuff (after he came home and laughed all the way to the trash) I'd have a good sized pile every month.

why you doing women's work? I haven't opened my mailbox in over a decade. I get enough mail at work, don't need to waste my time looking through house mail too. If there's a bill it ends up on my desk.
