2008's Tournament of Bad winner is our DBotW. Seriously, there are more open jobs out there than there are people on unemployment.

It really is nuts. WFH jobs, albeit kinda crappy sales jobs, are lying vacant. $12.50/hr with commission to do pajama work and people won't do it?

My neighbor hired a guy who lives across the street from their main farmstead, a certified auto mechanic, to work part-time on the farm. He did all the mechanic-type work in the shop, plus spot sprayed weeds, helped clean out bins, general farm labor.

The mechanic told him a couple weeks ago he could no longer work for him, he'd quit his job and was going full-time welfare.

I get the feeling this is a very passing phenomenon and as the material shortages really hit a lot of firms will have massive layoffs because they don't have raw material.

Also, these jobs all suck. If you're gonna be poor you might as well be poor and do a fun job.

My last 3 jobs have started at 9.00, 11.00, and 12.00. The hours are rough and the labor can be too but I don't see how they could have paid much more. I mostly enjoy(ed) the work but none of them should be career jobs really. I always have the choice to leave and probably will after a year or two. It astounds me that my coworkers don't want to work and don't put care into their jobs. While there are corporate issues the workforce has issues too.

I think there is a difference between having to work and having a safety net. I watch a co-worker who is a single mom in my department put in like 55hrs a week because she has to.

My 16 year old makes $13.80 an hour plus tips at Starbucks. Almost all locations are hiring. Even part-time workers are eligible for healthcare, 401k and education benefits. It’s a portable job, so if you move, you can work at the Starbucks in your new town.

Contrast this with a healthy 38 year old neighbor who figured out she can make more staying at home than working. She not only has unemployment, she recently got a Link card. Her husband works, so they certainly don’t need welfare. They spent last weekend in Galena, and are headed to Clearwater next week. That’s your tax dollar at work.

Agreed, but better than nothing. Good first job out of school, one would think.

My state thankfully cut off those extended UI benefits months ago. I'm sure Illinois will keep finding ways to keep the gravy train flowing though.

Right now if you actually want to work and are a good worker, it's the time to get a boost in your salary. Both my wife and I got pretty good raises this year as companies want to hold onto their talent and a lot of people who do have jobs are shopping themselves on the job market to see what's out there.

Take advantage of your employer while you can. Loyalty be damned.

The new pay transparency laws help immensely.

we've had to substantially increase pay and benefits to retain workers as well

The good ones still take care of their workers.

After barely 120 days at my new gig, I was given a raise and just recently was advanced a couple days vacation as normally PTO doesn't kick in until after 1 year.

But yes 100% agree with the "get what you can" mentality.

A while back, one of my FB friends, who is an ultra ultra liberal informed me and the rest of her friends list that we are experiencing a workforce revolution.

I'll hang up and listen for your answer

Nah, that's the crowd that feels like its "unsafe" to end work from home.

my 16 yr kid works the phones and cash register at a local pizza place. 10 bucks and hr plus any tips. they also have to grab a table or 2 whenever its busy. makes about $22 bucks an hr. the owner and I were joking around (because i told them they could only work about 15 hours a week) and he was like, i could make them full time! He's usually always hiring but still hasn't opened for lunch because of finding workers. He said a good server can pull 50k easy.
