Paul doesn't guard his position much anymore but he used to when he was younger. He gets a pass but the younger guys nah. There is no reason for a dude in his 20's to be ducking covers on defense. Some dudes have never bothered to guard their position. Others have deferred for so long that I cannot remember a time in which they actually did it. Lebron James for instance. Steph Curry also.

I don't agree with this. If you have a very high usage guard you should be trying to rest him as much as possible on defense. Doing ALL the work on offense can be pretty tiring. Let those guys rest on the other end and just guard the guy standing in the corner.

Best players on NBA teams (particularly superstar guys) have always dictated whom they want to check if the guy plays their position. Do you think a young Westbrook was going to allow Scotty Fucking Brooks tell him whom he was going to guard if he wanted to guard Chris Paul? It doesn't work like that.

Yes, it does work like that. Theres like a dozen guys or less in the NBA who can tell their coach who they are going to guard and have the coach bow to it. Defensive game plans are way too schemed up to let some player say no fuck that, re-do your whole plan, im checking this guy today.

Not as much as you might think. It's mostly done to hide bullfighter like defenders more than anything.

The good to great defenders will more often than not (overwhelmingly so in fact) guard their positions. The turnstiles will not. It's not "playground" basketball as much as it's basketball. Always has been. Always will be.

Its not done to hide anything. Its a strategic choice based on a shit ton of variables that teams have entire teams of people dedicated to.

Its the same reason Giannis doesnt guard KD in Nets matchups. Giannis a fucking dog. Nobody would say hes gutless. And hes literally a DPOY defender. Hes not ducking KD, hes just too valuable to the Bucks to risk him getting fouled up in the first quarter

What defines people as athletes is their willingness to compete. This is new age NBA bullshit. The reason Michael Jordan is regarded as the best ever is because he took challenges. Both offensively and defensively.

Anyone that is offensive minded can "get theirs" when they know they don't have to play defense. There is no real pressure on them. That shit is easy. Ask any NBA player or anyone that has played basketball and they will tell you the same thing.

When guys have the ability to come back at you it makes a big difference. If you're that dude then you have to guard. None of that ducking shit.

If he ducks Durant then maybe he is. You have said guys like Paul George are "gutless" yet all he has done from the time he has been a rookie was check his position. Even when he was undoubtedly the best player on the team. So has Westbrook. Why didn't coaches ever "scheme" to take them off the best player if they played their position? Chris Paul always guards his man. Well that was til he got old.
Tatum takes covers too. So has Jimmy Butler. So your they scheme away doesn't make sense if I can name plenty of guys who guard their position.

I also can plenty (Many more) that don't. And that is why I started the thread. There are a ton of scary ass guys out there who duck all day long. Who you guard as a player tells a ton about who you are as a player and always has.

Agreed with FF - LTG is applying playgroud logic to a professional game. In American Airlines Arena, Doncic is guarding Bogdanovic so he doesn't get into foul trouble guarding Trae Young. Jason Kidd would be stupid to start Doncic on Young.
