French Open doubles player Miyu Kato of Japan disqualified for accidentally hitting a ball girl. Isn't a ball boy/girl always at risk of getting hit by a tennis ball at these gran slam tennis tournaments? Like isn't that there whole job to catch errant tennis balls? Quote: French Open doubles player Miyu Kato and her partner were forced to forfeit a match when Kato accidentally hit a ball girl in the neck with a ball after a point on Sunday. In the second set on Court 14 at Roland Garros, Kato took a swing with her racket and the ball flew toward the ball kid, who was not looking in the player’s direction while heading off the court. At first, chair umpire Alexandre Juge only issued a warning to Kato. I wasn't really sure what "accidentally" meant in this context. That video makes it hard to see what actually happened. Did the player just randomly whack a ball out of frustration after losing a point? If that's the case, I have no problem with the disqualification. |

You're right. It could have been disrespectful or it could have been just an unlucky lob to the person who collects and distributes the balls. |

Seems what happened is a ball hit the net and sort of sat there in the center of the court. The player went to hit it out of the way backwards...like a batter sort of swatting at a ball on the ground to knock it back towards the dugout. The ballgirl was running out to get the ball and got hit. Seemed like a freak accident and nobody should care because its women's tennis.

The amount of cigarettes and alcohol I saw consumed on tennis courts in the 80's.. Hell, I was pretty sure that was why the adults were playing. |
