And some students in Berkeley built one nearly as good as ChatGPT’s best for $450. The tech companies want to frame this as a red scare that will require a NASA-in-the-Sixties level of federal investment lest the USA lose face, but the reality seems to me that the limit of what a neural network can do is being reached and its allowing all sorts of low budget operations to catch up. I would imagine there are many garage-tier builds that are getting pretty close to the big boys, as well as European models that are as well. But those dont strike fear and demand the appropriation of billions of dollars the way big scary China does. |

The thing is that AI is mostly hype. So of course you can create similar results cheaper. It's simply an aggregation of things people have said in digital form. It's destroying stock prices because it turns out that Meta and Google haven't in fact created human sentience that is used to sum up search results on if Caleb Williams is a good quarterback. |

In the Cold War the Soviets had armies of people writing bogus newspapers about how the USSR was five years ahead of the West yada yada yada. China does the same thing but on an internet level scale. |

The Silicon Valley versions of AI is bloated and going nowhere fast. Deepseek is just offering the basics for free and any kid in his mom's basement (almost) can run the same program as any billion dollar genius firm like Meta or Google or Microsoft, despite their constant flushing of money down the drain. I tought I read where they are charging $200/mo for Chatgpt pro? Who the fuck...? And you're still hemorrhaging money. That's your business model? They are all kinda fucked because there is no next great technological "thing" and this AI bullshit has just been a distraction. It doesn't know anything. It's not the development of the smart phone or PC Sentient my ass. This Tech sector is in for a major ass-whopping simply because it has blindly thrown billions of dollars towards something that now is essentially free, and that will unfortunately bring us all down.
