Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. discriminates against blind people by printing paper money that makes it impossible for them to distinguish among the bills’ varying values, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.

The ruling upholds a decision by a lower court in 2006. It could force the Treasury Department to redesign its money. Suggested changes have ranged from making bills different sizes to printing them with raised markings.

The American Council for the Blind sued for such changes but the Treasury Department has been fighting the case for about six years.

So the American Council for the Blind thinks that paper money is discriminatory. I'm sure this will be appealed to the US Supreme Court, but right now as it stands all US paper currency would have to be completely redesigned and resized for the blind to recognize it.
Also millions of ATM and vending machines would have to be retrofit, probably at a fairly high cost.
I understand how hard it must be to get along as a blind person with paper currency, but as someone with sight, I can say I use actual cash pretty much only when dealing with a street pharmacist.
There are already alternatives that wouldn't cost billions to introduce, like debit cards for example?
There are also battery powered readers that will scan a bill and announce it's value with a speaker.
I have no problem helping those with impairments but this is going to cost tons of money for a small percentage of the population when, as I said, free or low cost alternatives already exist.
I'm looking for your opinions.

I share your concern about the cost of having to change the system, but I cant necessarily disagree with the court. I do think its fair to have a system for blind people to be able to see how much cash they have. I think its funny that we have this problem, yet drive thru ATMs have the braille system.

Blind people do have the means of reading their cash. Again, readers are available to anyone for less than a hundo, and I would even endorse subsidizing them for those who would need it.
But to change all our currency and all our atms and vending machines? WAY more expensive. Are you willing to pay for that?

That would seem to be your answer right there. I would say it is by definition discriminatory but that doesn't mean everything has to change if an accommodation can be made to the existing system.

Actually yes, I wouldnt mind seeing tax dollars go towards that. Beats the hell out of some shit our money goes towards. As for readers, what do you mean? Its not like blind people always have a seeing person with them. What if they are by themselves and want to order a pizza or something. Obviously they are using their card, but they couldnt use cash because are they gonna trust the delivery guy? Basically they cant ever use cash unless a loved/trusted one is nearby that they know isnt screwing them.

Im guessing he's saying the court for this ruling, but it may be blind people for not being able to see the money.

I think that music is discriminatory against the deaf and should be banned.

Don't take offense to this but you don't pay a lot of taxes and in your current position there is not much that you would pay if taxes increased. As for readers, again I said they're little scanners that audibly recognize currency.

I was quasi nominating the US Court, but I more or less put it here so I could enter a poll.

Every blind person I've dealt with in buying something had thier bills folded and sorted a certain way so they knew what was what.

Is Basketball discriminatory against short people? Coke against those with diabetes? Bicycles against those in wheelchairs? Nope.

No offense taken, but Ive worked in jobs where I had 25-28% for taxes taken out and have felt the frustration of not seeing those dollars spent wisely, but how much are the taxes really going to increase for changes to be made? If there are little machine readers that you can purchase, then Im changing my mind on the issue, because that would seem to be a happy compromise I would think.

Apples and oranges, Frank. None of those groups need those activities/products.

Blind people need to be able to use money.

This is our chance to redesign our currency. Take it. With the redesigns under Clinton and Bush, our money has become fucking ugly. The redesigned portraits look like hydrocephalus patients. The giant purple number on the back of the five looks like a joke. Then again, most people in the world think our currency is a joke the way it has been mismanaged.

Why would tax money go to this? Should we buy everyone who can't walk a wheelchair? Maybe they should get free limo rides to work. After all, it is discriminatory that you need legs to drive a car.

While I think the country should be compassionate and giving to people in need, a gov't handout is not the answer to anything. Where would it stop? Who will decide when the playing field is even enough?

Mr. Governor, what of the already existing electronic alternatives? Perhaps Debit cards?
(FF, you can order a pizza and pay with a debit card as well).

So far, this is exactly where I am with this topic.
How can we redesign the currency so those who can't read can tell how much money they have?

I said that in my post.

I also said if there are machines that audibly recognize money that are available for home use, then I think thats fine. I dont see why we need to do more than that.

Because I dont think they should be restricted from using cash. Fine, I will change my example. What if a blind guy wants to go purchase some goods from a street pharmecist, and he doesnt have a trusted friend available? He's really gonna trust the dealer?

Just because I think the system is discriminatory does not mean that I think it should change as I mentioned in my first post. Readers would seem to be bulky and not very practical. So, I would imagine most blind people would prefer to use a debit card. For those that don't want to or don't have bank accounts, a reader may be made available to them and that would seem to alleviate the discriminatory problem.

The reason I would deem this different than all the other examples I've read so far is that the government has established this system so it should be made workable for all citizens, not the case of people needing wheelchairs or diabetics needing to drink Coke.

I've had blind people write a check in front of me. On more than one occasion. If they can manage to do that, the rest should be able to manage to use a debit card, or fold/order thier bills so they know whats what.

Obviously, many blind people have developed ways to cope with these problems before and will not need any assistance. But, for those that do, give them some help.

Is that such a controversial stance?
