Albert Snyder sued members of the Westboro Baptist Church (whom Fred Phelps supports) for attending Synder's Marine son's funeral (Michael Snyder, who was gay) and waiving signs bearing anti-gay slurs and shouting "God hates the USA".

Phelps supports this group of morons, who travel to military funerals to profess their hatred of homosexuality.

Snyder sued this group of protestors for $11 MILLION.

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals then turned around and proclaimed that not only will the lawsuit be thrown out, but Snyder has to pay for all legal costs associated with the lawsuit, which totals $16,510.80.

So, who is the biggest douchebag?

These Westboro people are dispicable, but there is no grounds to sue them.

Any kind of frivilous litigation against them just gives these guys the attention they are so desperately seeking.

I don't see where Snyder would qualify as a douche. The courts is the douche here while Phelps is just a big piece of shit who should be beaten down and analed till he loves it

I would have a hard time blaming someone since criminal charges are not an option. Looks like he was trying to get them the only way he could under the law...

But there really wasn't anyway to "get them" under the law. The lawsuit was frivilous. The only way to stop these people is to change the law, and that approaches really dangerous territory when you start discussing restricting speech.

Everyone knows these Westboro people are pricks, but you are not going to stop them under any current laws. Either they should be ignored and not covered in the media, so they hopefully stop doing this because of lack of exposure, or maybe people should start giving them a good old fashioned ass whoopin. I would vote for the latter.

The best thing to do would be for the funeral home and/or cemetary to be on the lookout for these Westboro clowns press charges for tresspassing if any of them even steps foot off of public property.

Lawsuits like this (right or wrong) are usually more about hurting the other party rather than coming up with a reasonable figure. The whole "Pain & Suffering" thing seems very subjective. I'm not saying I agree with it (I really don't, in fact), but think about how you would feel if someone did something similar at the funeral of someone you loved...

I would feel absolutely horrible, if not enraged if that kind of thing happened at a funeral for my son. However, whenever I see "lawsuit" I immediately am reminded of how "sue-happy" we have become.

This is how I feel about these large sums of money that people seek in court. I would never do it, but I can't fault someone for trying in a case like this.

Phelps is a prick who unfortunately knows what he's doing. I'm sure everyone is looking for any little slip-up he or his followers make when protesting but it hasn't really happened yet.

Fear not for snyder. He has o'rielly donating some funds to his cause. As far as phelps and his crew go... stop giving them what they want and talking about them and showing them on tv. This is what they want. Have some dudes go make out in front of them. That would truly unravel them.
