For being uncool. $10 million marijuana crop found growing on South Side By STEFANO ESPOSITO Staff Reporter/sesposito@suntimes.com October 3, 2012 1:38PM Updated: October 3, 2012 10:54PM The lush crop of pale green plants growing in neat rows on the far South Side was, by one estimate, just days from being ready to harvest. Unfortunately for the grower, Chicago Police got there first — and spent Wednesday hacking away at what’s thought to be among the city’s largest marijuana operations discovered growing outdoors. The crop, spotted by a Cook County sheriff’s officer on a routine helicopter patrol Tuesday, might be worth as much as $10 million on the street, police said. The plants — some as tall as 10 feet high — sprouted up in the middle of unused industrial land along the 10600 block of South Stony Island, thick with brush and tall grass. “It’s surrounded by tall grass, and basically it’s a huge field you wouldn’t see anywhere but from the air,” Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters Wednesday. Police estimated the growing area to be about the size of two football fields. Even Cook County Sheriff’s Officer Ed Graney admitted that luck played a big part in him spying the plants from 1,000 feet in the air. “I may not have noticed it myself, except I happened to glance down at the right time,” Graney said. Graney, working with Chicago Police pilot Stan Kuprianczyk, said he spotted half a dozen plants from the air, but it wasn’t until police tramped through the brush that they found more than 1,000 marijuana plants. Police were still trying to figure out Wednesday who owned the land and were investigating who might have planted the crop, probably last spring. A man — a lookout — was seen fleeing the area when police arrived. The lookout left behind a sleeping bag, some fresh food and other camping gear, police said. |

I hope this guy won't be getting his pension early. What a dope... Quote: Teen victim identified in fatal shooting; officer responding to call shoots self in foot
A teenage boy has died after a Near North Side shooting Thursday night, during which a responding officer was wounded when he accidentally shot himself, police said. About 9:20 p.m., 16-year-old Devonshay Lofton was in the 1300 block of North Cleveland when someone riding on a bike opened fire, authorities said. The teen was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where was pronounced, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Devonshay Lofton lived in the 1300 block of North Hudson, the medical examiner’s office said. A police officer who was responding to the shooting was getting out of his vehicle when his gun discharged, police said. He had a gunshot wound to the foot and was in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. |

The bullet went through his knee and out his lower leg. Amazingly enough, no permanent damage. Young Furious was in awe of this story. Teenage Furious, on the other hand, was able to throw this back in Sr.’s face anytime he referenced my behavior as “stupid.” |

Risk/reward.....to risk your career and pension over the pot would be pretty foolish. I have to think they will dust the camping supplies and food left by the lookout. If he's got a criminal history, his prints will be in the system and BOOM goes the dynamite! |

wow. even rockford cops are pretty cool. the city ones anyway. county not so much and madison cops are actually likeable. they are always right there in the thick of the partying, and you can talk to them and joke around with them. they take their jobs serious but they dont abuse their power at all. i guess it helps when there is very little worry of a gunfight breaking out |

Pat Camden (police union version): Officers arrived on the scene and observed several individuals playing in traffic, upon approach they observed they were possibly intoxicated and acting recklessly. They attempted to warn them about their behavior but were called to another incident and departed. No information at this time as to the full nature of the second incident. |
