They're all like that. Looks like it's supposed to be more smartphone-friendly, I guess?

I don't like all the new site logos. They all have the same sort of vaguely brooding, intimidating look. That's what happens when you have one designer having to make too many designs in too little time. I miss the charm of the old ones.

Of course, Second City Hockey has been gutted, so no reason to keep going there anyway.

BleedCubbieBlue's new layout sucks. I assume Ugie's golf blog does as well.

It's terrible. Makes me not even want to go there.

Al Yellon is awful. That's enough to avoid the site.

Brutal, the CI crew was second to FifthFeather in my Blackhawks blogroll. The site looks awful. I guess gotta give the new guy a chance before judging him. Sucks for him that he gets this new gig and there's no hockey to write about

The twitter box is great for fast updates. Al can keep the rest.

There have certainly been mixed views on SBNation's recent layout changes. The whole thing is part of SB United, which is a movement to "unite" the 300+ blogs on the network into some type of collusion. Most major blog networks have a similar united format (i.e. Gawker).

The changes were also made due to the advent of newer internet browsers and, yes, mobile users.

Personally, I am still getting used to the many changes on the network.

EDIT: Although, I will say the inclusion of the new Longform articles have been a welcome addition. Very much a direct response to some of the writing on sites like Grantland.

This new layout is very difficult to view quickly to determine if you want to read anything.

Which means you'll need to stay on the site longer (in theory).

Andrew Sharp's stuff is also worth a read.

Yeah...or I just will go less and less. While I do enjoy BCB and Al Yellon's thoughts...I can and will go elsewhere. Website function is a big factor for me.

Too bad for us you don't care about search function.

:P

Interesting read about Deadspin, Grantland, and SBNation: http://outkickthecoverage.com/bleacher-report-to-grantland-the-spectrum-of-online-sports-media.php

Long story short, it discusses how sites like Deadspin and SBNation have more writers with less pay (SBNation paid out less than $1 million to its writers last year, so non-#fasttrack) while Grantland pays its writers handsomely, which is possible due to its big brother ESPN.

Ugie...with your insider knowledge... do you know how many (if any?) have their SBNation gigs as their primary job?

I know that most Gawker Media writers have that as their only job...but they have far less employees total than SBNation does.

I know for sure Al Yellon has a ton of money. Just not sure how...but he is Jewish...and those guys find a way.

If theses sites pay people to write for them, I need to get in on that.

There are a select few of the Senior Editors and personalities that receive a generous salary. However, as with most writers and bloggers, many of the Featured Columnists also work for other publications.

Thanks for the links (by way of the link). Very interesting stuff.

I noticed that Outkick the Coverage was pretty hard on SBNation, calling them Bleacher Report's cousins. I never go to their main site or even the city sites, just the team-specific blogs. Is it that bad there?

This was linked in the link. Everyone should read this.

SBNation isn't perfect, but it certainly isn't as bad as how that article painted them. I've worked with the network for three years and while I disagree with some of the goings-on, it could be a LOT worse.
