Man, I've heard of the financial leeches that come out of the woodwork but this is some bullshit... Made me think of the scene at the end of "Benji" when those dudes were talking about how great their lives would've been if Ben lived and made it big, and they weren't even family.

Tyron Smith, the Dallas Cowboys' 2011 first-round draft pick, signed a $12.94 million contract last July. That should have set him up for life. Instead, it has created division and acrimony within his family.

The Dallas Morning News reports that police responded to a 911 call from the offensive tackle's Dallas home after siblings came by to "harass and torment" him "in the pursuit of collecting financial gain," in the words of the police report.

Two of Smith's sisters were among the three people who showed up to the house. The newspaper writes that Smith is "emotionally torn apart" by the developments, which aren't new. He also was forced to file a protective order against his stepfather and his mother during the summer in order to keep them away.

The protective order prevented his parents from visiting Smith at training camp, which was within driving distance of their California home. A family member reportedly had to be removed from the practice facility.

"Lesser means were tried, and they weren't successful," said Smith's attorney, John Schorsch. "You can use your own imagination as to what it took for a guy that big and that imposing to be that worried."

Smith reportedly gave his family a substantial amount of money after he was drafted, but relatives keep coming back for more.

The entire story is a sad one and a reminder of the pressures that athletes face and fans never see.

I love tales of athletes' financial demise. This one is sad because his own family is going to bankrupt him. I prefer the stories where they buy dozens of sports cars, wear a new tailored suit for each game, have a posse of 50 folks, owe Vegas casinos X amount, and so on. I never feel sorry for those cats.

I would have no problems telling my 2 brothers and sister to fuck off to high heaven were I to come into money and they started sniffing around expecting me to buy them stuff. Whatever I would do for them would be of my own volition and if they came back for more they would be summarily dismissed. Conversely, if any one of them were to strike it rich, I certainly wouldn't expect nor would I ask them for anything. I make my own way in my life, thats just the fucking way it is.

Doesn't apply here. You think this rookie has dropped thousands in casinos or has bought 10 cars?

No. He's saying he likes those stories better than this one.

Yeah, and this is only like four people on him. Imagine if he had 20 guys like Benji Wilson.

I have always said that if I came into a lot of money, that I would give a lot of it away to my Family & friends. I would take care of them. Maybe instead of being selfish, this guy should have done the same.

I call bullshit.

If this kid went broke handing his money to his family, you'd be the first guy in line to call him stupid for allowing himself to go broke.

He did. Try actually reading the article before you go insulting a guy just because of the color of his skin.

Kinda like when SHead said he didn't judge someone's success by how much money they earned and a few posts later said everyone who smokes pot is a loser with a minimum wage job.

Exactly. Family handouts are good. Its what Families are supposed to do. After all, why do we work hard, invest & save? So it can be passed on to our children to help them when they are starting out on their own, in Marriage, to buy their first house, etc... Unfortunately, there are way too many greedy & selfish parents who blow all of their money living a lifestyle that cant afford.

If my children grow up to be successful theres no way im gonna be standing in line for a handout. They earned that money so let them enjoy it. If they wanna take care of the family so be it.

This young mans family should be ashamed of themselves. Good for him to actually step up and get restraining orders. Dont need shit like that in his life

Apropos of nothing but Benji Wilson's "Early Life" Wikipedia entry reads almost exactly like a SHARK post.

lol at the bolded. feel bad for the guy.

Attorney claims Cowboys' Smith has lost $1 million

The saga of Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith's family difficulties has taken another twist.

Smith's attorney, John Schorsch, claims that the player is missing up to $1 million and that he might pursue legal action against the family.

Earlier this week, Dallas police received a 911 call from Smith's home after siblings, according to the police report, arrived to "harass and torment" him for "financial gain."
Schorsch plans to have an accountant examine the players' personal finances before possibly possibly seeking legal recourse.

"I'm not certain of the amount of money that's gone," Schorsch told The Dalas Morning News. "I would suggest to you that the numbers are in the seven digits that need to be accounted for. I don't know how much of that, if any, is a legitimate gift and how much of that is squeezed out of him or how much of that is flat-out taken. And I know of the latter two categories it's a bunch. I'm going to make sure all the money is justified and it's not going to be pretty."

But Smith's mother, Frankie Pinkney, denied in a conversation with The Morning News that she took anything from her son without his permission or badgered him.

"I don't know anything about any missing money," she told the newspaper. "The money that we did receive from Tyron was all accounted for and everything is in writing, and he's authorized all of it."

Smith's three stepsisters and two stepbrothers were among the people who came to his front door this week when the 911 call was made.

According to The Morning News, Pinkney blamed Smith's girlfriend, Leigh Costa, for the disagreement and said Costa wouldn't allow her family access to the home.

"Leigh reported that my daughters were threatening her and they were demanding money," Pinkney said. "My daughters did not make any threats."

Costa told The Morning News, "Nothing she's saying is factual. I didn't do anything. I'm a drive-by victim to his family's chaos."

Smith, the ninth overall pick in the 2011 draft, signed a four-year, $12.5 million contract in July 2011.

Smith has refused to comment this week about the situation.
