Some people don't have family, family doesn't live close, don't celebrate Thanksgiving, celebrate it on a different day etc. If stores feel that there will be enough business to warrant being open then more power to all those involved. |

Nothing spells "holiday" like celebrating a massacre of Native Americans. Pass the turkey! |

I think it's understood that when you work retail, there's a possibility of working on some holidays. I worked retail back in the day and had to work some major holidays. I didn't bitch about it. I did my time and a half and enjoyed the extra hours on my paycheck. Not sure what your complaint is. |

My 2nd job is at a restaurant. Had to volunteer to work two of Xmas Eve, NY Eye and NY Day. Sucks, but you know it going in. |

Not sure why my thread got the quick ax. It's a relevant topic. People like to put Black in front of any day now, or -Gate at the end of any scandal. Real creative... |

If all of those workers stayed home, I'm sure people would bitch about how certain stores aren't open on holidays. |

Retailers are desperate so they need a way to push the Christmas shopping season earlier and earlier. You're going to start hearing Christmas music in October in a couple of years. |

Back when I worked retail I had to work Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, NYE and NYD. It sucks but it's part of the deal. |

Never worked Thanksgiving Day. Worked NY Day once. Worked Xmas day once in grade school. I was part of the crew that set up/broke down the Bingo tables for our church, and they had a day after Xmas bingo. These people know it going in, and if they don't know it they are pretty stupid. I'm sure these companies sent out memos weeks/months ago letting them know these upcoming holidays were mandatory. |

I understand that these stores are desperate to stay in business with the advent of the internet stealing sales on Thursday, but it does seem to be too much. The whole experience kind of sucks. 500 people in line at Best Buy at 4am to get a free webcam and 100 cd-r's for a dollar. |

Which is why I haven't and would never do it. If people think it's worth it, and the stores feel it's profitable, I don't see where any of the complaints stem from. Like Kid said, Dan summed this whole thing up nicely at the beginning of the thread. |

My wife does the 3AM shopping routine every year. Last year she said most places were opening at midnight instead of just really early in the AM. It's fun for her, it's like her version of tailgating but there is no alcohol and its a bunch of chicks and it's fucking boring. I just stay home and sleep in my nice warm bed. |

Let me see if I can hit the major points. These stores are opening earlier every year, allowing people to skip Thanksgiving and stand in line for things they don't need. They are probably using a credit card for the items as well. Employees have to come in on another holiday, out of fear of losing their average to bad job. Sounds great. Hopefully stores will soon open at 7 AM on Thanksgiving so we can just get to business. Enough of this other nonsense. |

When I worked at Ford City Movie Theater are busiest days were: 1. Easter 2. Christmas 3. Day after Thanksgiving Day after Thanks giving was all kids as their parents would drop them off and go shopping all day. We were like a day care for them. |

Drop In wrote: These stores are opening earlier every year, allowing people to skip Thanksgiving and stand in line for things they don't need. They are probably using a credit card for the items as well. That's their choice. I would never skip Thanksgiving to go shop. That sounds like an awful idea. If someone thinks it sounds like a good idea, go for it. It's silly to tell someone Thanksgiving is more important than shopping if they don't believe it is. They have the right to that belief. As far as employees go, as long as they are informed of the job requirements and know about them when they agree to work there, I don't understand what the big deal is. Maybe some of them prefer to work those days if time and a half is given and they need the extra cash. |

And lets not go crazy about what a sacred day Thanksgiving is. It's based on gluttony and violence and celebrated as such. This isnt a holy day that needs to be revered. That being said it is my favorite holiday by a mile. |
