If it is relatively new, the mother board should display a series of blinking lights to tell you what is wrong with it.

It's pretty old. It has one red blinking light.

It starts the fire and goes for about 3 seconds and then clicks and shuts off. I assume it is a bad sensor. It may be a dirty sensor. I'm about to pay $149 to find out!

It might be a limit switch.

Post subject:  Re: My furnace!

If it shuts off after 3 seconds, it's almost certainly the flame sensor,n assuming it's not a standing pilot ignition...
There's a little metal rod there, in the path of the flames... should be screwed in most likely with a 1/4 in. screw...
you can pull it out, scrub it with a scotch brite. Reconnect, retry.

So I looked into it more. It doesn't have a pilot light. It has an ignition system. It's this little box with a panel I can screw off. Sounds like a job for the professionals. It is old. It's definitely from the 90s.

It will be moot in a little bit, but here is what it looks like: Image

What shuts off after a few seconds? The blower? Flame? Gas valve? All?

90s? OLD? Fuck me.

You'll probably need a new one. Or, just have Darko stop by & fix it for you. I'm sure he hasn't anything better to do.

The flame goes down the pipe and shoots out and then it stops like it shut itself off.

If the gas valve was broke, it wouldn't stop running.

Go with darko, clean the little metal rod off with some steel wool, you should be good.

New furnace.

Crack in the heat exchanger. Needs to be replaced. Ended up choosing to do the heater and the air conditioning at the same time. The units are from 1989 so it's probably time.

He did go after the little metal rod and then said "That's not good" when he saw what it was doing.

Thanks for all your help. Ironically, my response to someone who created a thread like this would have been "Get a new furnace" which ended up the correct answer.
