It starts the fire and goes for about 3 seconds and then clicks and shuts off. I assume it is a bad sensor. It may be a dirty sensor. I'm about to pay $149 to find out! |

It might be a limit switch. |

If it shuts off after 3 seconds, it's almost certainly the flame sensor,n assuming it's not a standing pilot ignition... There's a little metal rod there, in the path of the flames... should be screwed in most likely with a 1/4 in. screw... you can pull it out, scrub it with a scotch brite. Reconnect, retry. |

So I looked into it more. It doesn't have a pilot light. It has an ignition system. It's this little box with a panel I can screw off. Sounds like a job for the professionals. It is old. It's definitely from the 90s. |

What shuts off after a few seconds? The blower? Flame? Gas valve? All? |

If the gas valve was broke, it wouldn't stop running. |

The units are from 1989 so it's probably time. He did go after the little metal rod and then said "That's not good" when he saw what it was doing. Thanks for all your help. Ironically, my response to someone who created a thread like this would have been "Get a new furnace" which ended up the correct answer. |
