We've always had a very lax vacation policy at work, but it made sense. If your team can cover your area, no worries, go ahead and take it. You didn't need to schedule it weeks or months in advance, which almost every has used to varying degrees.

We also had a policy that let you bank up to a years worth of vacation, so when the end of the fiscal year hit, you needed to be down to that amount or you would forfeit the excess. Prior to this current year, the company decided to reduce the amount you could bank to three weeks (essentially a two week reduction for those maxing out).

Well, it would appear that this decision, which was announced well in advance of this current year, still managed to catch people by surprise, because lots of people still haven't touched their vacation yet, and now we are looking at a plant full of people who have seven weeks of vacation to burn in seven months. Now management is saying they need to have everyone's vacation for the remainder of the year in by the end of this week, or you are likely to get denied if you put in a request later in the year.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Americans in general take way too few vacation days. I would be down with like a 4 day work week and about a month and a half of vacay time each year.

These kind of people find shared left-hand turn lanes problematic.

Mac and the Candyman are not most Americans.

When I worked a semi normal job, I got 2-3 weeks vacation per year. I never took those long vacations, but took off on Fridays a ton and sometimes on Thursdays. While I had base pay, most of my income was still commission, thus think my boss didnt care if I was there or not. Did you make money was the bottom line.

I worked at this place for 6 years and when I quit, HR girl gives me a form to sign to make sure we are all in agreement and she has 92 days of unused vacation! My boss was cool about it and realized he just didnt keep track...so I got a nice check for all those unused days! almost $13.00 !!!!
