More than half of students in Palatine-Schaumburg Township High School District 211 will have new iPads next year, leased with $1.13 million diverted from classroom computer purchases and lab upgrades.

The school board decided to lease up to 7,000 Apple iPads after a successful six-month pilot program with 37 teachers from nine different academic departments and 1,400 students using the devices as part of their daily curriculum.

"Teachers recognized that the iPad devices allowed the students to create their own knowledge and to access countless original sources beyond a single text," said Dan Cates, associate superintendent for administrative services. "Students were using the devices to create and share original work that was not comparable to the previous paper-and-pencil exercises that had defined the learning task for years. Students who never or rarely read anything were reading."

7000 iPads. I guess that there were no homeowners in that taxing district that could have used some tax relief.
"Create their own knowledge" was another thing that stood out to me too. This whole thing is silly.

What a waste of taxpayer money to be giving this kind of tech to kids. They're gonna tear those things up anyway.

Let's file this away next time a referendum comes around and the school district is playing poor and threatening to lose arts and music classes or teachers in general because they simply don't get enough money to give our kids educations.

We are moving toward bookless classrooms. In fact the upcoming changes in standardized testing nation wide will be done online and not paper.

The money used was taken from funds marked for computers/lab upgrades.

It is not like they charged the tax payers more money in order to be able to do something like this.

And as conns said the day is coming quickly where there will be no books and will all about technology. So you can take the money directed towards books, etc and put it towards new technology to bolster the classroom and students.

My stepkids all have some classes where they have an old paper copy of the book at school, but they can leave it in their locker and pull up a digital version at home to reference... beats hauling a 14 lb math or science text home when you really only need ten pages.

There's a lot of nice things about going electronic for learning, one of which is the CTRL+F function. You can't do that in a paper book unless you happen to hit upon something they've indexed.

Hopefully as an added bonus this teaches kids to take care of their crap, since you can't get it wet, leave it under the clothes on your floor and then go walking across it, leave it lying around the lunchroom, etc. but I'm guessing that will be a mystery that never gets solved.

When I was in school, if we wanted to communicate after school we got on top of the chimney and sent smoke signals...and we liked it.

I remember coming home from school, and sitting in the kitchen having a snack while I watched a black and white 13" TV.

So, you have a laptop and a cell phone already. How much marginal value does an iPad bring? I would say not much. I don't see them used much in business application. Except taking orders at Chipotle.

If your kid doesn't have access to a decent computer, he/she is already doomed to a life of failure. No sense wasting money on those kids.

(I'm not being serious, but I am).

The iPad can replace every textbook a student would need.

Cost of 1 iPad < Cost of every textbook a student needs.

Alright, IF all kids have good access to computers, they can be a nice little addition to the package. If not, they are a woeful substitute.

In our elementary district, the parent is responsible for damages deductible which is on the order of 350 dollars.

That really bothered me as well. Is this part of the "everybody's right" mentality, or just someone using an incredibly poor choice of words. I have little faith in the latter.

We have iPads that will stay in the classroom for grades K-2. We have Macbooks that are currently used in Grade 6 and will ultimately be used from grades 3-8 with the option to take them home in grades 4 and up.

The iPads are protected by a cover that is guaranteed against damage from normal drops (ie off a desk up to 10 foot drops).

The Macbooks that go home are more the concern and where the liability comes into play.

Many districts are doing the bring your own device thing now. What they typically don't plan for is having everyone hook up their ipad, iphone and other various devices to the network and suddenly it kills the network. Or blocking stuff like facebook, pandora, etc during the day.

None of the above. It's called self-directed learning, it's the Holy Grail of modern pedagogy, and it's best achieved through the use of differentiated instructional technology. This thread is a bucketful of stupid.

Not to mention that the best way to compete in the modern world is through extensive use of technology and extensive experience with it. That's why all these things are being put into classrooms when #2 pencils and trapper keepers were all that we needed to be part of the educational generation that got dominated by Asian education.

I'm all for as much technology in possible in schools. There will be two types of jobs going forward. Manual labor and technology jobs. It's nice that regardless of how rich a persons parents are they'll have access to enough technology to keep up.
