For being such a smarmy backstabbing weasel. His best broadcasting days are well behind him as well. He hasn't had an interesting thought since he was with the Cubbies. Nothing pisses me off more than people like this s.o.b. He didn't have the balls or the integrity to air out his differences with those two cretins while he was working with them. Instead he waits till he's off the show and then he goes on the offensive. That Reinsdorf comment was pure bullshit as well. Reinsdorf has done very little for anyone (except guys like Jay Williams, i.e. former players). He lucked into the greatest athlete in history. Jordan brought Chicago those titles, not old Jerry. Reinsdorf's greatest contribution was bringing Krause on board, who made the critical Polynice for Pippen trade. Krause gets credit for that, not Reinsdorf. Stone is a tired old fool with very little to contribute, he's also a world class backstabber. Improve the broadcast and get the senile old cowboy and the smarmy bland prick out of town.

To say Jerry Reinsdorf has done little for anyone is flat-out wrong.

But I agree with the Stone stuff.

I edited that. I meant the fans, really. I understand what he's done for his former players.

When you think about it, he's just another OPM jockey who had the good fortune to be in right place at the right time and sign the right checks. Sure, he's loyal to employees who are loyal to him. He donates money, but there's obviously a quid pro quo aspect to that, as he seems to have carte blanche to do whatever he wants on the state's dime. I wouldn't call him a builder, an innovator, a patron, or any of that. He's a guy who bought sports teams when they were cheap, rode along as they appreciated to absurd heights, and got the state to build him a ballpark at the expense of anyone wanting to stage a convention in Chicago ever again. Big deal. He's just a businessman, and not a particularly ethical one.

He certainly got lucky with Jordan and he definately put the gun to the heads of taxpayers with the Sox but the fact is he has had success and you have to give him credit for that.

Okay. Congratulations on government-subsidized profit. Do I have to give credit to 80% of all North American sports owners, who also would not turn a profit if not for taxpayer subsidies? Because I don't think that's necessary.

Absolutely. But saying he brought Chicago 7 championships is pretty dumb, misleading comment.

Me either. I just find it hysterical when Cub fans who loved him try to suggest he's changed. He's the same smarmy douche he's always been. The only difference is the team he works for.

Not a Cubs fan, hate them and their idiotic fanbase. I don't think he's any good anymore, maybe Hawk's presence has ruined him for me.

Steve Stone is the best Baseball analyst in Chicago...then again, his competition is really really bad.

Len Kasper as a play by play man brings more "analysis" to the table than Stoney.

I thought Steve Stone was brilliant in 2003 and 2004, but also I think I've learned more about baseball since 2003 and 2004. If I went back and watched a Cubs telecast from then (somewhere I taped the back end of a Cubs-Reds doubleheader in late '04 because I was in class -- 2004 in the college dorms, the last time and place anyone was using VHS -- but who knows where our videotapes are now, probably trashed) and forced myself to be as objective as possible, I probably wouldn't have the reverence for his analysis that I had when I was still getting a true feel for the game. Some of that I learned from Stone, some just from watching or reading about a shit ton of baseball whenever I could.

Power is power, and Jerry has it in spades. Do not minimize the importance of that, because it is pivotal to his job. Don't count closing a one-sided stadium deal that favors his team as a negative. Not many men could have negotiated that deal in the first place, and he had the gumption to sail it home. And I don't want to hear any clock-punchers complaining that you are paying for it, because it doesnt affect your daily life or household bottom line in any noticeable manner.

The Cubs would have won at least one championship by now if Jerry owned them for as long as he's owned the White Sox.

Incorrect.

He said many things that weren't obvious. He was always very good on young players and their strengths and he was good at predicting pitches (you might think YOU knew where those pitches were going, but Joe Six pack doesnt.)

He was and is a good analyst.

People change, in general. And I think his sour relationship with Hawk has really affected him and how he does his job.

His "hits" on 670 are a big reason I started to dislike him. I don't know if he did that while with the Cubs, but if not, that's a big difference. Maybe he's always been a douche, but his 670 appearances just make it more obvious.

Well, we disagree, but at least you aren't saying he was great with the Cubs and suddenly sucks with the Sox. I never liked him and that didn't change when he came to the Sox.

Say what you will about DJ, but he had a subtle way of highlighting Hawk's ridiculousness and he did it in a way that Hawk didn't recognize. Happily he now gets to do the same to Farmer. Stone is just tense and short-tempered with Hawk's nonsense. It makes for a bad broadcast.

Well, if you really listen to him, you know he disdains SABRmetrics as much as Hawk and Morgan. I don't really mind that. These guys are former players and they view the game from a different perspective. They know what it actually takes on the field. Thought. Process. That may lead to them misunderstanding and dismissing what is really no more than an attempt to quantify particular events. I just don't see why one guy should be mocked and pilloried for espousing the same viewpoint that another guy is lauded for. But Stone is Jewish. He has to be smart.

I don't know if he's better. He just isn't as overt about it. He won't go on some screed about "pointy-headed physicists who think they know baseball. You know what Yaz would tell those guys?" But I'm almost certain Stone shares the same core beliefs when it comes to modern statistical analysis.

Stone: There's no substitute for good scouting. When Hughie Alexander found me I was on a high school diamond in Mentor, Ohio throwing 98 mph. I was significantly slower than that when I won my Cy Young.

Hawk: Hughie Alexander was one of the best, if not THE BEST, scout in the history of baseball. He just looked at how hard you were throwing. He didn't need any stats.

Stone: *Smarmy Chuckle* If he had he would never have signed me.

Hawk: You could say the same thing for a lot of guys. The Hall of Fame is full of guys who didn't have the proper isometric numbers as amateurs. But I'll tell you what, the good scouts found 'em anyway. And you know what they all had in common? Thought. Process.
